SALISBURY — News of an anti-deportation protest planned in downtown Salisbury on Friday has been circulating on social media, causing Downtown Salisbury, Inc. to state that a large gathering would not affect events planned for Friday night.
A poster announcing the protest has been shared on social media, causing some to wonder if a large gathering would interfere with the city’s annual Wine About Winter, which opens up businesses downtown from 5 to 9:30 p.m. However, Downtown Salisbury’s statement said that the protest was planned for Bell Tower Green, which does not fall into the event’s footprint. It also stated that “there is no indication this protest will be anything but peaceful,” so there is no impact expected for Wine About Winter.
The poster being shared states that the protest, simply called a protest against deportation, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the park.
However, Downtown Salisbury’s post states that while the city has been made aware of the social media postings, it has not received any requests for permits for any events.
It is unclear what organization is behind the planning of the protest based on the poster being circulated online.
