MLB: Another new team for Owen White

Staff report

Hopefully not many Owen White fans went out and bought Cincinnati Reds gear after the Reds picked him up in a cash deal with the Texas Rangers.

White was only a Red for a few weeks. Now he’s a New York Yankee.

The Reds DFA’d White on Jan. 29 after the acquired veteran pitcher Taylor Rogers.

The Yankees claimed White, a Carson High graduate who was a second-round pick out of high school in 2018, off waivers on Wednesday.

The Yankees are acquiring depth before Spring Training. They added White and infielder Braden Shewmake to their 40-man roster on Wednesday.

White will head to big league camp in Tampa, Fla., where he and Shewmake will be joined by a group of 26 non-roster invitees.

The first workout for pitchers and catchers is Feb. 12, followed by the first full squad workout on Feb. 17.

Shewmake, 27, was a second-round pick by Atlanta in 2019. He has struggled to hit in brief opportunities in the big leagues.

White, 25, was considered a top prospect not that long ago. He was Arizona Fall League Pitcher of the Year and represented the Rangers in the Futures Game. He finished the 2023 season ranked 66th among all MLB prospects.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander pitched in five major league games for Texas, but didn’t have much success.
