Area Sports Briefs: Misenheimer starts season hot

McKenzie Misenheimer (East Rowan) had a great start to the college softball season.
The junior outfielder was 6-for-9 in Chowan’s first three games with two homers, a double, five runs and six RBIs.
The Hawks beat Virginia Union twice and Elizabeth City State once.

Emory & Henry’s Karsen Simpson (West Rowan) went 6-for-13 as the Wasps started the season 2-2. Simpson has six RBIs and has scored three runs. Emory & Henry put up some numbers in a 32-1 win against Lees-McRae to start the season.

Kary Hales (Carson) helped Catawba start the season 4-2. Hales is 9-for-21 with four RBIs and has had at least one hit in every game.
MLB
Vance Honeycutt (Salisbury) is projected by Baseball America to be the center fielder for the Baltimore Orioles in 2028.
Signings, commitments, offers
West Rowan’s EA Nance signed with Pfeiffer’s softball program.
Carson libero Kaylee Thonen announced a commitment to Barton’s volleyball program. She was the Rowan County Player of the Year.
South Rowan held signing ceremonies for football players Zach Barham (Greensboro College), Gavin Bisco (NC Wesleyan) and Tristian Littlejohn (Gallaudet) on Wednesday, and the Raiders may have a few more.
West Rowan defensive back Israel Ford was offered by North Carolina A&T. Ford was earlier offered a roster spot by Wingate.
Salisbury defensive back Torian Brown and receiver Macari House received offers from Guilford.
HS indoor track
South Rowan’s Hope Julian qualified for the state meet in the 1000 meters (3:15) and the 3200 meters (11:32).
Catawba football
Catawba football head coach Tyler Haines and staff announced 22 signees on Wednesday.
Twenty-one are from the Carolinas, with one from Georgia.
“We are excited about our third signing class here at Catawba,” Haines said. “The 2025 signing class will help us take the next step as a program. It is filled with student-athletes who will represent Catawba Culture in the classroom, in the community and on the field! This group understands and accepts the expectations of Catawba football.”

Tracy Linker made a hole-in-one on No. 8 at Warrior on Tuesday.

GARS members played a Captain’s Choice at Rolling Hills with the teams picked by a computer.
The first-place team was Frank Gobble, Tom Dodge, Chuck Jones and John Daniels with a minus-9.
Three teams tied for second place with a minus-7.
The team of Ray Pope, Ken Anderson and Andy Griffin took second place. Third place went to the team of John Goodman, Brice Hollis, Bobby Miller and Cliff Radcliff . Fourth was the team of Gene White, Bob Niekras, Keith Larsen and Phil Rollins.
Closest to the pin on No. 10 was won by White. Longest putt on No. 9 was made by Rollins.
David Scearce won closest to the pin on No. 7 and No. 12.
The team of Keith Mason, David Schenk, Dale Cobb and Bill Rogers eagles the par-5 fifth hole.
