High school boys swimming: East’s Hawkins a state qualifier

CHARLOTTE  — East Rowan’s Rodney Hawkins III led male Rowan swimmers in the 3A Western Regional held on Saturday at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.

Hawkins was a state qualifier with a fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:22). He was ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:58). The top six in each event are automatic state qualifiers.

Lake Norman Charter’s boys had one individual winner, five second places and three third places and easily won the regional.

Central Academy, North Lincoln, East Lincoln and South Point rounded out the top five. Central Cabarrus was seventh and had one individual champion.

East scored 42 points and finished 15th in the team scoring.

The meet scored 16 places. Clayton Lowe was 14th in the 500 free. Cole Humphreys was 16th in the 200 free.

East’s 200 free relay team of Brett Steelman, Lowe, Humphreys and Hawkins was 13th. The same crew was 14th in the 400 free relay.

South Rowan scored one point on Marshal Faw’s 16th-place finish in the 50 freestyle.
