SALISBURY — Work can sometimes be just a job, but if you’re lucky, those you work with become family, and when something goes wrong, they are there to support you.
That’s the case for Lisa Perez, 38, who has worked at Culver’s on Jake Alexander Boulevard for years, was involved in a serious car accident on Thursday night, Dec. 19. on U.S. Hwy. 29 near Rowan Correctional Center.
While the details of the crash were not available from N.C. State Highway Patrol as of press time, those who know Perez said she has lost her left eye, hearing in her left ear, has serious head wounds, still suffers from dizziness and headaches, has to use a walker and may, or may not, be able to return to work.
Which means she and her family need help, according to Culver’s owner Corey Antonicci.
“The staff all love her, and we got together and decided we needed to do something to help, because she’s family,” Antonicci said.
On Tuesday, Feb. 4, Culver’s of Salisbury will donate 25 percent of all sales to Perez.
“We will also be holding a raffle onsite for guests to buy tickets for a few different raffle baskets that day,” Antonicci said. “We will be choosing winners and contacting them to arrange prize pick up the next day. The money will be donated to Lisa and her family to help cover medical costs, living expenses, and bills while being out of work.”
Leading up to the event, the store will offer roundups on purchases and will be accepting any donations.
A number of area businesses have donated items for the raffle including: Alexandria Bare from Local Focal is donating a raffle basket of $250 value; Stitchin’ Post Gifts has donated gift cards; Pots of Luck Florist in Concord is donating a 6-inch potted Peace Lily plant; and during the day, the Veterans Social Center has volunteered to run food to guests and assist in speaking with guests.
A number of Perez’ coworkers had kind things to say about her, though they asked the Post not to use last names.
“Lisa is family,” said Maddy. “I have never seen her to have a bad day. She is always laughing the loudest and her positivity leaves a mark on anyone privileged enough to meet her. So naturally when she is facing a difficult time, she has an army behind her.”
“She is like family,” said Ruth. “She is a longtime neighbor and coworker; I admire her.”
“She is like an aunt to me,” said Yuli, “and she gives great advice.”
She is an amazing person,” said Moni. “Even on my bad days, her smile and laugh always made me feel better.”
“Lisa is one of the Culver’s staff members that everyone loves,” said Max. “I don’t think I could name a single person that doesn’t get happy to see her when she walks in. If anyone deserves help, it’s her.”
Perez still does not remember exactly what happened in the accident, and when first responders initially arrived, there was concern about her survival. But Antonicci said Perez is “incredibly strong, and we just know she is going to eventually make a good recovery.”
Anyone wishing to donate or to participate in the raffle is invited to the restaurant on Feb. 4.
