SALISBURY — Better late than never.

Catawba’s women’s basketball team went down to the last minute before finally putting away upset-minded Tusculum on Saturday at Goodman Arena.

Catawba led by one with a minute to go, but won the South Atlantic Conference contest played in front of  430 fans, 88-81.

Tusculum (7-14, 5-12) got 22 points from Ni’Kiah Chesterfield and stuck with the Indians (13-8, 11-6), who have won eight of their 10 home games.

Nala Baker had a career game for the Indians, making seven 3-pointers and scoring 27 points. Janiya Foskey made it a terrific 1-2 punch with 24 points. Baker and Foskey combined for 15 rebounds.

Bailee Goodlett (North Rowan) had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. One of her rebounds was a big one in the final minute.

Catawba led by one late in the game and late in the shot clock when Baker made her seventh 3-pointer as she was fouled. She missed the free throw, but Goodlett got the rebound. That led to two made free throws by Baker. That clinched the game.

Catawba shot 40 percent and made 10 of 30 3-point attempts. The Indians won on the boards and also won the turnover battle (20-15), but they couldn’t shake the Pioneers. Catawba led 42-31 at halftime, but Tusculum put up 29 points in the third quarter to get back in it.
