SALISBURY — As February ushers in Black History Month, Livingstone College prepares to celebrate its 146th Annual Founder’s Day on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m., a pivotal occasion commemorating the college’s enduring legacy and mission.

This year’s program features a keynote address by Rev. Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III, a nationally renowned pastor, social justice advocate and transformative leader.

Haynes has served as senior pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, for over four decades, guiding its growth from fewer than 100 members to a congregation of over 12,000. His ministry is rooted in the fight for racial and economic justice, community empowerment and providing opportunities for future generations. Through impactful programs such as the THR!VE Intern and Leadership Program, which offers paid workforce opportunities to young Black men and women, Haynes exemplifies the values championed by Livingstone College’s founder.

Haynes’ commitment to education is matched by his own academic achievements, including:

  • A bachelor’s degree in religion and English from Bishop College, Dallas, Texas.
  • A master’s degree in divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
  • A doctorate in ministry from the Graduate Theological Foundation, where his dissertation focused on church growth in the context of social justice.

Under Haynes’ leadership, Friendship-West has donated over $3 million to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and students in need, furthering the educational opportunities of countless individuals. Recognized nationally for his contributions, he was frequently called upon by the Obama administration to provide counsel on issues ranging from civil rights to economic equity.

Each year, on Founder’s Day, Livingstone College pays tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Joseph Charles Price, the college’s founder and first president. Born Feb. 10, 1854, in Elizabeth City, Price rose to prominence as a scholar, gospel preacher, and one of the greatest orators of his time. His dedication to educating and uplifting African Americans laid the foundation for Livingstone College. While in England, Price raised $10,000 for the college, returning in 1882 to establish and secure the institution’s future.

Price’s vision of holistic education — educating the hands, head, and heart — continues to inspire. His faith in progress is encapsulated in his enduring words: “I do not care how dark the night is; I believe in the coming of the morning.”

Despite offers of wealth and prestige, Price devoted his life to the college until his passing in 1893, leaving behind a legacy that embodies selflessness, leadership and hope.

“As we honor the legacy of Dr. Joseph Charles Price, we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III to this year’s celebration,” said Livingstone College President & CEO Dr. Anthony J. Davis. “His dedication to social justice and education mirrors Dr. Price’s vision for this institution and its impact on future generations.”

Founder’s Day is a cherished tradition at Livingstone College, bringing together alumni, students, and community members to celebrate the institution’s legacy while looking ahead to a future of continued excellence. This year’s event promises to inspire all in attendance, uniting them in a shared commitment to progress and purpose.
