SALISBURY — Following a Friday fire, Isenberg Elementary School Principal Dr. Michael Courtwright issued a message to the student body that the building would be closed for at least a week while repairs are made.

Monday is Veterans Day, so the students were already scheduled to be out of school, but the message indicated that Isenberg would also be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday for students.

“We will hold a parent meeting on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in the Salisbury High School auditorium to answer questions you may have about our next steps, remote learning and our device distribution plan,” Courtwright’s message said. “If you are unable to attend, we will also send a message on Tuesday evening to all families about our remote learning plan.”

For now, the plan is for remote learning to begin on Thursday, Nov. 14, and continue through at least Friday, Nov. 15.

“The length of time necessary for remote learning will be determined as the week progresses and we will communicate with you by Friday evening about the plan for the next week,” Courtwright said.

The administrator said that they were working on a plan for meal distribution.

“In addition to forming a plan for instruction, we are also working on a plan for the delivery of school meals while students cannot physically be present,” Courtwright said. “We will keep you updated with all information to ensure that our Isenberg students are cared for and receive quality instruction while we are out of the building. If you have questions beyond what we are able to share the parent meeting on Tuesday, please feel free to email me after that time.”

The fire began around 4 p.m. on Friday on the roof in the area above the media center where a crew was in the process of making repairs.

“Several fire trucks and crews from local fire departments responded quickly and put out the fire,” Courtwright said. “In that effort, the combination of smoke, soot and water caused some damage to the inside of the main building. We have already started identifying what areas will need repair, and cleanup will begin immediately.”
