Catawba recognizes students showcase research at NC Honors Association conference

SALISBURY — Five Catawba College Honors students attended the annual North Carolina Honors Association (NCHA) conference held in Cullowhee in September. Accompanied by Catawba faculty and staff, the student presented original research spanning disciplines from science to social science and media studies, representing Catawba College with distinction.
Each student’s work highlighted the academic rigor and passion for research fostered at Catawba. Michaela Lantz’s poster, “Investigating the Biphasic Activity of Ferulic Acid in Ovarian Cancer,” was awarded the best poster presentation at the conference. Judges praised Lantz for her comprehensive understanding of a complex topic and skillfully communicating her research to specialists and those less familiar with the field.

- Reagan Brown – “The Letter of Navigating the Complexities of Public Administration”
Oral presentations:
- Hestia Beltran Bamaca – “The Satanic Panic and the Battle of Media Censorship”
- Laurel Keasler – “Making Waves: Exploring the Discourse Community of Swimming”
- Abby Hilton – “Progressive Institutional Change: Hiring Individuals with Disabilities”
The keynote address at the conference was given by esteemed author Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle, whose work “Even As We Breathe” has gained national recognition.
