Celebrating Women’s History Month

Throughout March, the Salisbury Post is recognizing figures and moments in Rowan County’s female history that stood out in recognition of Women’s History Month.
Salisbury was founded in the late 1700s, and it would take approximately 200 years before the county seat would have a female as mayor. Margaret Kluttz was elected to the position in 1991 and served as Salisbury’s first female mayor.
At that time, the mayoral position was not elected separately from the city council members. Instead, the leading vote-getter was traditionally voted into the role by their fellow council members. Kluttz was the leading vote-getter and was elected into the mayoral role unanimously by her fellow council members.
Since Kluttz left office, Salisbury has had three more female mayors. Susan Kluttz (no relation), Al Heggins and Karen Alexander have all served since Margaret Kluttz did not seek re-election in 1997.
