Tuesday crash leaves at least one dead

ROCKWELL — At least one person was killed as a result of a two-vehicle traffic collision near East Rowan High School on Tuesday night. Multiple other victims were hospitalized. 

A spokesperson for the American Red Cross confirmed that at least one person was dead after the collision which occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Hwy. 52 near St. Lukes Church Road during the midst of a flight from law enforcement. 

Granite Quarry and Rockwell police departments, Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputies and the NC State Highway Patrol were on the scene shortly after the collision with anther passenger vehicle. In the ensuing crash, one of the vehicles came to rest on a sign in front of the high school.

Emergency scanner traffic indicated that multiple occupants were trapped in at least one of the vehicles.

An air-evac helicopter was originally requested but the victims that were hospitalized were reportedly transported over ground by ambulance. 

Details surrounding the cause of the collision have not been made public at this time. The story will be updated as more information becomes available.
