Two people were displaced by a house fire on Thursday morning. The fire began in and was contained to the attic.

SALISBURY — A Thursday fire left two people displaced after their home was severely damaged.

The fire began around 10:20 a.m., and when firefighters from the Ellis Cross Country Fire Department arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the roof of the home, according to a fire official. The fire was mostly contained to the back of the home, so firefighters were able to search the home quickly and determine that they also needed to make an entry through the roof.

A low-hanging power line did pose a problem when attempting to access one side of the roof, but workers from Duke Energy cut the line to allow the firefighters to safely enter that side.

The fire was under control around 40 minutes after it began. A spokesperson for the Red Cross, who is assisting the two displaced residents, said that the fire began with an overloaded fuse box in the kitchen. The two residents noticed the fire early, so they were able to gather as many of their belongings as they could carry and escape the home.

The spokesperson also confirmed that no one was injured in the blaze.

Ellis Cross Country Roads Fire Department was the first on the scene. Other departments that assisted included Salisbury, Spencer and Franklin fire departments.
