SALISBURY — A man has been arrested after police say they were contacted by the parents of a five-year-old about the man sexually abusing their child.
Deputies were contacted by the victim’s parents on Dec. 2 after their child disclosed details about the abuse to them, according to a spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies began to investigate the allegations, and the child repeated the details to them. The spokesperson said that additional evidence was obtained during the course of the investigation.
Investigators from the sheriff’s office partnered with the Department of Social Services and the Terrie Hess House Child Advocacy Center for the case. During the course of the investigation, deputies confirmed that the suspect was known to the child and had frequent access to them.
The suspect was identified during the investigation as 60-year-old Martin Franklin Cordell. Cordell was arrested on Tuesday and charged with two counts of first-degree statutory rape and two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center and given a $75,000 bond.
