Cheerleading: South wins championship

RALEIGH — Bring it on. South Rowan’s cheerleaders are state champions.

The North Carolina High School Association’s 21st State Cheerleading Invitational was held on Saturday.

There are a lot of different divisions of competition.

South’s 17-person team won the eight-team division for Performance Cheer Varsity Small Non-tumbling D-1.

South’s score was 83.35. The Raiders’ division also included Franklin, Nothside, Eastern Gulford, North Henderson, Smoky Mountain, Richlands and Chambers.

East Rowan’s 22-person squad was third in the Performance Cheer Varsity Large D-1 division.

Cardinal Gibbons won the Carolina Cup that goes to the  top varsity team in the competition regardless of division.

Weddington won the Tar Heel Trophy, which goes to the best-performing team in the Game Day Division.

The event was produced by All Day Cheerleading, a Shelby-based business.
