High school volleyball: Second-round losses for West, South

The volleyball season ended for Rowan County teams on Tuesday,

South Rowan went down to the last point of the fifth set at Lake Norman Charter but lost 25-22, 15-25, 25-22, 13-25 and 15-13.

The teams were very even, split their regular-season meetings and were South Piedmont Conference co-champions.

Seeded 11th, South finished 21-7.

Lake Norman Charter (23-2) advances to play third-seeded Kings Mountain (30-1) on Thursday.

Avery Welch had 12 kills. Leah Rymer had 10, and Laney Beaver had seven.

Beaver had 18 assists, while Rymer had 17.

Campbell Withers had 30 digs. Meredith Faw had 13, Beaver had 12, and Rymer and Avery Fisher had 10 each.

Kings Mountain swept 14th-seeded West Rowan (18-8) and swept the Falcons 25-11, 25-16 and 25-19.

It was the last match for West coach Jan Dowling, who announced that she is stepping down after 10 seasons at West and a 28-year coaching career.

Emma Clarke led West with 10 kills. Lydia Wilson had five, and Skyy Ruben had four.

Wilson had nine digs.

Ava Gusler had three aces. Ruben had three blocks.
