College basketball: First loss for Catawba women

ANDERSON, S.C. — Catawba’s 17th-ranked women’s basketball team suffered its first defeat on Wednesday.

The Indians (11-1, 8-1) made a miraculous comeback at Anderson, but couldn’t quite finish the job and lost 85-81 to the Trojans at the Abney Center.

It was the first post-Christmas action for the Indians.

They had a number of COVID positives over the holidays, but had their normal starting lineup for the game.

Down 73-59 in the South Atlantic Conference game with 9:42 left to play, Catawba went on a furious 14-0 run and tied the game on a Janiya Downs layup with 5:09 remaining.

Brittney Stafford made a 3-pointer for Anderson to put the Trojans back on top, and they were able to hang on. Stafford also made the clinching free throws with six seconds left.

Both teams got off to a blistering start. Anderson led 34-30 after a quarter and was up 54-48 at halftime.

Shameka McNeill scored 30 for the Trojans (8-6, 8-2).

Anderson shot 60 percent well into the third quarter and finished the game at 50.8 percent.

Catawba made 18 of 19 free throws.

Sara McIntosh led the Indians with 19 points. Lyrik Thorne scored 17 and went 8-for-8 at the foul line. Downs scored 14, while Taisha DeShazo had 10.

Turnovers and rebounds were almost even.

The difference was at the 3-point line. The Trojans were 8-for-22 from 3, while Catawba was 3-for-18.

Longwood 109, Pfeiffer 69

FARMVILLE, Va. (AP) — Isaiah Wilkins scored 21 points as Longwood romped past Pfeiffer.

Wilkins shot 8 for 10 from the field. Zac Watson had 16 points for Longwood (8-5). Taylan Rowe and Jerome Savoy each had 22 points for the Falcons.

Furman 58, UNC Greensboro 54

GREENSBORO (AP) — Mike Bothwell had 20 points as Furman narrowly beat UNC Greensboro.

Alex Hunter had 16 points for Furman (10-6, 2-1 Southern Conference), which snapped its four-game road losing streak. Marcus Foster added 13 points and eight rebounds. Jalen Slawson had three blocks.

De’Monte Buckingham had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans (8-5, 0-1).

East Carolina 88, Tulane 80 (OT)

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Tristen Newton scored 14 points in overtime on his way to a career-high 32 to lead East Carolina to an 88-80 win over Tulane.

Capping a second half that featured five lead changes and five ties, Newton hit a 3-pointer to even the score at 71 with two seconds remaining in regulation and send the game to overtime.

Brandon Johnson had 14 points and 10 rebounds for East Carolina (10-3, 1-0 American Athletic Conference). Brandon Suggs added 12 points and 11 assists. Vance Jackson had 11 points.

Jaylen Forbes had 24 points and seven rebounds for the Green Wave (5-7, 2-1).

Gardner-Webb 88, Charleston Southern 63

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — D’Maurian Williams had 20 points as Gardner-Webb defeated Charleston Southern.

It was the first Big South Conference game of the season for both teams.

Lance Terry had 19 points for Gardner-Webb (7-7, 1-0 Big South Conference). Anthony Selden added 16 points. Kareem Reid had 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Tahlik Chavez had 11 points for the Buccaneers (3-10, 0-1), who have now lost four games in a row.

Davidson 88, Saint Joseph’s 73

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Foster Loyer had 25 points as Davidson won its 10th consecutive game.

Michael Jones had 18 points for Davidson (11-2, 1-0 Atlantic 10 Conference). Hyunjung Lee added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

North Carolina A&T 65, Presbyterian 57

GREENSBORO  (AP) — Demetric Horton scored 26 points as North Carolina A&T defeated Presbyterian  in a Big South Conference opener for both teams.

Horton hit 10 of 13 shots.

Marcus Watson had 16 points and 11 rebounds for North Carolina A&T (6-9). David Beatty added 10 points.

Winston Hill had 19 points for the Blue Hose (8-8). Trevon Reddish added 10 points and six rebounds.
