Cleveland police chief resigns, interim appointed

CLEVELAND — After less than three years, Cleveland Police Chief Bradford Weaver resigned from the post late last week, said Mayor Patrick Phifer.

No reason for the resignation was given.

Weaver was promoted to chief in September 2017 after then-chief David Allen retired. Weaver resigned on June 16. The Cleveland Board of Commissioners appointed Jon Jessop, who was already with the department, as interim.

Phifer said the board had not discussed a timeline of a permanent appointment. The commissioners do want to get someone in the position and hope that it would be a job that Jessop would consider applying for, Phifer said.

He said the commissioners will advertise for the position but right now they are “trying to get stability there.”
