SALISBURY — A bicyclist was struck and killed early Wednesday while traveling along railroad tracks at East Council and Depot streets.

His name has not been released because family have not been notified.

The collision occurred sometime after midnight when Salisbury police responded to the scene along with the Salisbury Fire Department. Police spokesman Lt. Lee Walker said the bicyclist was traveling northwest on Council Street and disregarded the railroad crossing stop arms, entering the intersection of the railroad tracks.

According to a Norfolk Southern spokesperson, the train with 53 cars had left Charlotte and was headed to Chicago. Norfolk Southern reported no crew members were injured, but they were replaced by a relief crew to complete the trip.

Norfolk Southern says it continues to remind the public that even during the current pandemic, train traffic remains constant and extreme care should be taken when approaching or crossing railroad tracks.

Walker said there is no indication that Norfolk Southern contributed in any way to the collision.
