SALISBURY — The May issue of Salisbury the Magazine, a publication of the Salisbury Post, has reached subscribers and is now available elsewhere.

Closures prompted by the response to COVID-19 have affected some of the normal distribution sites. If you can’t find a copy at your regular spot, copies are available on a rack outside the Salisbury Post office during business hours, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.

The Post is located at 131 W. Innes St.

The May edition’s cover features seven members of the Livingstone College golf team. The men are all natives of Uganda who have become or are destined to become an integral part of the Livingstone team while enrolled as four-year students here.

Elsewhere in the May edition, look for a story on Bob Willetts, whose railcar restorations have found homes in places such as Cincinnati, New York, Miami and Chicago. Willetts and his crew work out of a shop location in East Spencer.

Contributing writer Elizabeth Cook brings readers the story of John Smith and his “cookie factory,” which brings together family and friends to bake thousands of oatmeal sandwich cookies for charitable causes.

Dennis Davidson sits down with three local adventurers —  Mike Wright, John Pendzinski and Matt Staton — and tells us about the trio’s trek last November to the Mount Everest base camp in Nepal.

The men trained six days a week for 21 months in advance of the challenging hike.

Writer Liz Moomey takes a nostalgic trip back to the glory days of the Empire Hotel For this story, photographer Jon Lakey was given wide access to the inside of today’s shuttered property.

Lakey serves as the main photographer for most of the May issue’s stories.

This edition’s Rowan Original is Danélle Cutting, manager for Elizabeth Holmes Hurley Park, and Deirdre Parker Smith offers a quick Q&A with her.

Also look for Smith’s review of Kristy Woodson Harvey’s new novel, “Feels Like Falling,” in Bookish. James Taylor provides the artwork for Salisbury’s the Place. Genevieve Martin provides the Through the Lens photo.

Scene pictures come from events prior to the statewide COVID-19 restrictions and include the Meals on Wheels barbecue chicken fundraiser, the Kiwanis Pancake Festival and the Humane Society of Rowan’s spaghetti dinner.

A note: A May calendar of events is not included because of all the activities canceled or postponed because of precautions taken for COVID-19.

Salisbury the Magazine publishes nine times a year. The Summer issue will be reaching subscribers in mid June and distributed elsewhere later in that month.
