West Rowan boys

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s boys had their biggest offensive outburst of the season and beat Mooresville on Friday, 82-66, in non-conference action.

The Falcons (4-2) and Salisbury tied in the pre-Christmas standings and will play each other in the first round of the Christmas tournament in the 4 vs. 5 matchup. It had not been determined as of Friday night, who will be the 4 seed and wear the home jerseys.

West got double-figure scoring from five players. Jalen Moss (23 points) led the way and got scoring help from Chaz McCombs (16), Jay Joseph (12), Ty’Kese Warren (12) and Macari Allison (10).

Moss has led West’s scoring in five of six games and is averaging 20.3 points per game.

It was a tight game for three quarters, but the Falcons pulled away with a 29-point fourth quarter.

Salisbury boys

WALLBURG — Salisbury has finally been reinforced by a number of football players, but it may take a while for everything to come together.

The Hornets (4-2, 4-2) took a 50-45 lead to the fourth quarter at Ledford, but lost Friday’s Central Carolina Conference game, 70-67.

Walker Lackey, a 5-foot-9 senior, poured in 34 for the Panthers (3-4, 3-3), who had been struggling. Lackey made five 3-pointers.

Tyler Partee added 15 for Ledford.

The loss stopped a four-game Salisbury winning streak.

Zay Kesler led the Hornet with 18 points. Jacquez Smith scored 16, Cameron Stout had 11, and Nate Brown scored 10.

East Rowan boys

GRANITE QUARRY — Trey Ledbetter, East Rowan’s head boys coach for five seasons not long ago, has taken over as interim coach,

Kurt Misenheimer resigned seven games into this season and jayvee coach Eric Mulkey guided the team for two games.

Ledbetter, who had been assisting at Mount Pleasant, has led practices all week and was back on the sideline for Friday’s 69-56 loss, ironically enough, to Mount Pleasant.

“I know those guys pretty well,” Ledbetter said. “I knew what was coming at us.”

A lot of what was coming at East (1-9) was 6-foot-8 junior Hunter Sloop. He scored 22 to lead the Tigers (5-5).

“We actually did a pretty good job against him, got him in some foul trouble, and he had to sit for a while,” Ledbetter said.

Jamal Williams, a 6-6 junior, missed a few dunks, but he scored 13 for Mount Pleasant.  The Tigers put five in double figures.

East got double digits from David Jordan (season-high 15 points), Gavin Sprinkle (15) and Jake Hunter (10).

Jordan knocked down three 3-pointers, while Sprinkle had two 3s to go along with several driving buckets.

“Those two really played well and we played hard as a team,” Ledbetter said. “It was a four-point game with four minutes left, but we had to put them on the line and they made their free throws.”

Mount Pleasant pulled away with 11 free throws in the fourth quarter.

The biggest negative for East was an injury the loss of  Sammy Pinckney, who suffered an injury to an eye socket. Pinckney was an important part of East’s rotation, bringing quickness and toughness.

East will be seeded eighth for the Christmas tournament and will be taking on A.L. Brown or North Rowan in the 4:30 p.m. game on Dec. 26.

MOUNT PLEASANT (69) — Sloop 22, Williams 13, Carnes 11, Little 11, Pruitt 11, Newsome 1.

EAST (56) — Sprinkle 15, Jordan 15, Hunter 10, Padgett 7, Jones 4, Valley 3, Shuping 2, Pinckney.

Mount Pleasant      12     15    21    21    — 69

East Rowan             6      19    14   17    — 56

South Rowan boys

LANDIS – South Rowan has pulled some surprises against Thomasville, knocking off the Bulldogs three times during the past two seasons.

But not this time.

Thomasville was ready and clobbered the Raiders, 104-63, in a Central Carolina Conference game. The fast-paced Bulldogs led 50-27 at halftime.

Braden Graham scored 22 for South (1-7, 1-5), the sixth time he’s topped 20 points in the Raiders’ eight games.

Barrett Thompson scored a season-high 11 for South.

The Raiders played without Brenden Finger, who has been their No. 2 scorer.

Tyree Barnes scored 18 to lead the onslaught by the Bulldogs (5-3, 4-2).

South will be the No. 7 seed for the Christmas tournament. The Raiders’ opponent (North Rowan, A.L. Brown or Davie) will be determined on Saturday.
