The annual Rowan County 4-H Food Show was held on Dec. 7 at Rowan County Cooperative Extension. This year’s food show theme was “Egg-cellent Recipes” — all recipes had to contain eggs.

Six Rowan County 4-H’ers participated in the food show. Youth arrived at 10 a.m. to decorate their tables and showcase their delicious recipes. Family and friends came to support and assist them, with over 20 people attending this event.

The official judges, Penny Collins and Rowan Extension Agent Toi Degree, visited each youth participant and taste-tested their recipes. They also asked questions about nutrition, their cooking experience, and why they chose their particular recipe.

While Collins and Degree were judging, other attendees walked around to taste test each recipe and were able to vote for their favorite for the People’s Choice Award.

Results of the Food Show are as follows:

Cloverbuds (youth ages 5-8 as of Jan. 1) — Natalee Chapman, breakfast item, received a 4-H participation ribbon. Emory Stewart, side dish, 4-H participation ribbon.

Juniors (youth ages 9-13 as of Jan. 1) — Talton Correll, lunch or supper entree, first place. Allison Mares, side dish, first place. Bayley Kruger, baked goods, first place. Olivia Stirrup, baked goods, second place.

The judges also chose a Best of Show winner. Kruger won with her Strawberries and Cream Bundt Cake. Kruger was also the winner of the People’s Choice Award.

A recipe booklet was created with the recipes that were used by the 4-H’ers in the competition. You can view these recipes here: https://rowan.ces.ncsu.edu/2019/09/rowan-county-4-h-food-show-dec-7/

Cooking is just one of the opportunities that 4-H offers. There are also many other activities in 4-H available for youth ages 5-18 (as of Jan. 1). If you are interested in learning more about 4-H opportunities for youth, contact Laura Allen, 4-H agent, at 704-216-8970 or laura_allen@ncsu.edu
