Rowan One Church One Child Ministry Fall concert
On Sunday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. Matthew Weaver and Clay Lunsford will present a fundraising concert featuring Americana music, southern gospel, traditional Appalachian mountain music, western swing, blues, Irish folk and jazz.
The concert will be at Main Street United Methodist Church, 1312 S. Main St.
Two ways to help: Give a love offering to help purchase beds for a child receiving Child Protective or Foster Care Services; or help us find foster homes for children placed out of county, and adoptive homes for four local children waiting for a forever home. Info about the children will be provided at the concert.

S-R CWU annual Human Rights Celebration
Salisbury Rowan Church Women United held their annual Human Rights Celebration at First Calvary Baptist Church on Aug. 2. on t h e theme of “The Time Is Now! Unite to Serve.” Mayor Al Heggins, keynote speaker, emphasized how women have been a strong force for bringing needed change in the area of human rights.
Emily Perry was the recipient of the Human Rights Award for her work in voter registration and education. Perry is also one of the founding members of Rowan Concerned Citizens.
The hands-on mission project was Communities In Schools. School supplies and monetary gifts were collected and given to CIS Director Ron Turbyfield.
Church Women United includes more than 30 different churches and is open to all. The next celebration will be World Community Day at Gethsemane Baptist Church on Nov. 1. 2019 ‘Feed the Need’ fundraiser is at Morgan Ridge Vineyards
Rowan Helping Ministries will hold its second “Feed the Need” fundraiser at Morgan Ridge Vineyards on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 17.
After last year’s success, intended to be a one-time event to support the Food for Thought weekend food program for children, the event has been expanded to an annual benefit for all food programs at Rowan Helping Ministries.
Chef Santos, Salisbury’s well-known chef, restauranteur, and philanthropist, will be the featured chef and guest of honor for this year’s event.
Not only does Santos have a passion for food, but he has a heart for helping youth. Elizabeth and Owen Norvell recently published a a limited collector’s edition book detailing the chef’s story and recipes.
They considered putting the proceeds back into his downtown restaurant, Chef Santos Goodfellas, but Santos insisted the book sales benefit Novant Health’s Foundation for Infant and Children Services and Piedmont Players Theater Youth Productions. The Norvells donated 10 of the remaining copies for the event.
In honor of Santos, an array of Brazilian-fusion cuisine will be prepared using his recipes and served buffet style. Raffle prizes and a silent auction of nearly 40 different items will help raise additional funds for Jeannie’s Kitchen, three food pantries in Rowan County, and Food for Thought, all part of Rowan Helping Ministries.
Last year, Jeannie’s Kitchen provided over 83,000 meals to shelter guests and community members.
Rowan Helping Ministries now has a third food pantry, at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church in Rockwell, to complement the original food pantry in Salisbury and the one in Mount Ulla. The pantries provided 1,014,624 pounds of food to neighbors in need in 2018.

J.C. Price HS Alumni Assoc Fall Regional meeting in Cleveland, Ohio

Genealogical Society
The Genealogical Society of Rowan County will next meet on Tuesday Oct. 15 at 7 p.m., at the Salisbury Public Library. Following a short business meeting, Society member Steve Simpson will present an informative program, “How road signs can provide valuable clues when researching family history.” All are welcome; meetings are free and open to the pubic.

Carolina Artists
Larry Oldham will be presenting the program for the Carolina Artists Thursday, Oct.17 at 6:30 p.m. Meeting place is Rufty-Holmes Senior Center. Mr. Oldham was born in Greensboro but resides in Salisbury now. He has lived in New York where he worked for Capital Records and has a sign designer for Coke.
Art appreciation and art as an artist has given him the ability to paint what he likes for himself with the hope that others may enjoy his works as they see it.
