Area Sports: Salisbury tennis strong in CCC tournament; SHS soccer wins

Salisbury tennis put two girls in the singles semifinals of the Central Carolina Conference Tournament on Monday in Lexington.

The top six in singles and doubles will qualify for the 2A Midwest individual regional that will be hosted by Salisbury.

Salisbury’s Lillie Rusher had a first-round bye and defeated Oak Grove’s Abigail Everhart in the second round and Lexington’s Amaya Hurtado in the quarterfinals.

Salisbury’s Abby Campion had a first-round bye and won in the second round against Thomasville’s MeEshyah Bowman and in the quarterfinals against Ledford’s Gracie Hall.

Semifinals today will pit Rusher against North Davidson’s Emma Craver and Campion against Oak Grove’s Jessica Fuchs.

South Rowan’s  Jennifer Mysayakhom won in the first round against West Davidson’s Lilly Yancy, but lost to Craver in the second round. South Rowan’s Thyhila Burris lost to Central Davidson’s  Addy Comer in the first round.

Salisbury doubles teams of Kate Burton/Sophie Chmiel and Meredith Burton/Margaret Thurman advanced to the tourney semifinals Monday and   qualified for the regional.

HS boys soccer

Salisbury’s boys won against West Davidson 5-1 on Monday in Central Carolina Conference action at Ludwig Stadium.

The Hornets (10-5, 7-4) got three goals from  Joshua Portillo and one each from Brayan Aviles and Christopher Portillo.

Assists were credited to Joshua Portillo, Christopher Portillo, Aviles and Will Webb.

Salisbury’s defense of Axel Alejo, Juan Garcia Cortez, Gabriel Fuentes Reyes, and Angel Quintero held the visitors to five shots on goal.

“I thought we came out with a real sense of purpose and established a rhythm in the first half,”  Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.

Salisbury lost defensive midfielder Hugo Trujillo two minutes into the match and had to  adjust. Irvin Almaraz stepped into the role and did a great job.

“West Davidson keeper Nathan Morris had several fantastic saves, including the best save I’ve seen all season, to keep them in the match,” Parrish  said. “Once we got the second goal to move ahead,  things started clicking for us and we scored three goals in 11 minutes.”

Senior Night for SHS  is Wednesday. The Hornets will honor  seven — Trujillo, Juan Salazar, Brody Dillon, Shawn Henderson,  Almaraz, Juan Silva and   Quintero.

Chris Mercado made 11 saves for West Rowan in a 2-0 North Piedmont Conference loss to North Iredell.

Carson lost to Statesville 3-1 in NPC action on Monday.  Jaxon Wheelers scored for the Cougars. Osvaldo Ortiz had the assist.

South Iredell won against East Rowan 8-0 in  NPC play on Monday.

South Rowan lost to CCC leader Ledford 4-1 on Monday.

Tony Zempoaltecatl scored for the Raiders. Jordi Cortez assisted. Parker Anderson had 11 saves.

HS volleyball

Salisbury swept North Rowan in a non-conference match on Monday.  The Hornets won 25-14, 25-17 and 25-15.

Roziah Ellis served for six points for the Cavaliers, while Ti’Ashia Hanson served for five points.

HS girls golf

Oak Grove shot 237 for 18 holes and won Central Carolina Conference girls golf on Monday at Sapona.

Oak Grove’s Karlie Ann Jump shot 73.

College golf

Catawba senior Kaley Barts broke her own record for lowest score in school history, opening with a 5-under 67 at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational on Monday at the Country Club of Salisbury.

Barts collected seven birdies during her record round and has a three-shot lead over Coker’s Alicia Fajardo and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Ainee O’Connor.

As a team, Catawba also set a record, posting a   score of 297 to lead by a shot after the opening round.

Catawba leads Limestone and Lenoir-Rhyne by one shot.

Catawba’s men are in a tie for sixth after two rounds of the State Farm Intercollegiate Men’s Golf Tournament.

    

College football

The South Atlantic Conference players of the week are Limestone DB Mannie Ogletree, Carson-Newman running back  Troy Dendy and Lenoir-Rhyne return man Kyle Dugger.

Bowie State (5-0) is the only unbeaten team in HBCU football.

College soccer

Catawba’s women won against Coker 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Catawba (6-2-1, 2-1-1 SAC) got goals from Courtney Reavis, Maddie Capel and Katie Beck.

College cross country

Catawba runners turned in some of the best times in school history  on Saturday at Lehigh University’s Paul Short Run.  Hannah Mercer set a   record for Catawba women in a 6K in 22:42.

Ethan Bemis ran the fourth-best 8K in school history for the Catawba men in 25:28. Catawba will run next on Oct. 11  at Charlotte’s McAlpine Park.

Parks and Rec

  Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department is   accepting registrations for its boys youth basketball league for ages 7-15.

Cost is $30 per participant.  Registration runs through Oct. 26 at Hall Gym or online at www.salisburync.gov/play.

Salisbury Parks and Rec will offer coed Moonlight Basketball for  ages 12-19. The  free program runs on the first and third Saturdays of the month, from Nov. 2 through March.  Players must pre-register at www.salisburync.gov/play.  Call 704-638-5289.

Local golf

The Women’s Golf Association at The Country Club of Salisbury hosted the 4th annual Challenge Cup.

It’s a three-team event. There were six members from the Country Club of Salisbury WGA, six members from  the  Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association and six members from the McCanless Ladies Golf Association.  The format was 27 holes —nine  step-aside Captains Choice,  nine alternate shot and nine  individual matches.

Battling through  the heat, Corbin Hills took first place, with McCanless second, and the Country Club of Salisbury third.
