Mammograms offered on Mammography Awareness Day

The Delta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is joining with Novant Health Breast Center and First Calvary Baptist Church to take action against breast cancer.
Oct. 19 is National Mammography Awareness Day. A mammogram can often detect a problem before there is any physical sign. Mammograms will be given in the mobile unit in the parking lot of First Calvary Baptist Church. Women over 40 are encouraged to have an annual mammogram.
Pre-registration is required. For an appointment contact Marva McCain at 704-640-0087 or Earnestine Krider at 704-637-7183 and completing an application. There are a limited number of slots available. Appointments are first come, first served.
Applications deadline is Monday. There are a limited number of free mammograms for those without insurance who submit a completed and approved application. If you have insurance, it will be filed. All ladies must be at least 40 years of age to participate.
First Calvary Baptist’s Missionary Unit 6 will also offer free blood pressure checks, workshops, health and exercise activities and information.
In addition, sorority members will be available to answer questions about the college admissions process for high school seniors, covering all the steps from researching various colleges to complete the application process.

Catawba presents ‘We are One Voice’ today
Catawba College’s Department of Music presents its first Choral Concert of the season on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. “We are One Voice” features pieces by John Rutter, Paul Oakley, Moses Hogan and Barry Manilow. Choirs featured are the Catawba Singers, Catawba Chamber Choir and PopAC, led by Dr. Phillip E. Burgess.

Auditions for Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker

Auditions for Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker are set for Tuesday at Spotlight Dance Co., 120 N. Church St. Registration begins at 5 p.m.
Dancers age 6-18 are invited to audition, and the audition is open to the public. Rehearsals are Saturdays leading up to the performance. Cast fee is $50.
Performances are Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 19 at 3 and 7 p.m. at The Carolina Theatre of Durham. Spotlight dancers will perform on Dec. 19.

Schmeiser speaks on Old Courthouse clock restoration

KANNAPOLIS — Are you familiar with the large clock located in the tower of the Old County Courthouse in Concord? Scott Schmeiser will focus on how the project began, who is helping, the work required to remove the clock from its perch in courthouse tower, the challenges of the project and the current status of the restoration.

Applications sought for 50th annual Youth Legislative Assembly
Raleigh — Leaders of the North Carolina General Assembly invite North Carolina high school students to apply for the 50th Annual Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA).
Applications are being accepted for the conference to be held April 3-5, 2020, in Raleigh. Deadline is Jan. 31, 2020. Apply at https://www.ncleg.gov/YLA .
The NC YLA provides the opportunity for youth to engage with peers from across the state in a structured, positive, youth-focused environment. The YLA program is open to students in North Carolina who are in good standing at a public, private, charter or home school.
