College sports: Otto, Porter have big days

Area athletes update …

Football

St. Andrews quarterback Kacey Otto (West Rowan) threw for 229 yards and had a 34-yard touchdown pass in Saturday’s 41-34 loss to Georgetown College.

Devin Turner (West Rowan) only had one tackle for the Knights on Saturday, but it was a tackle for loss.

In Saturday’s 45-27 loss to Florida Atlantic, Charlotte’s Chris Reynolds (Davie) threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Reynolds also had a 28-yard pass reception.

Wesley Porter (East Rowan) had another big day for Sewanee in Saturday’s loss to Rhodes.

Porter made seven tackles, blocked a field goal and had 116 yards in punt and kickoff returns.

Tywun Rivens (Salisbury) made five tackles in Campbell’s 34-27 win against Mercer.

Wesley Jefferies (North Rowan) made three tackles for Minnesota Crookston in Saturday’s loss to Minot State.

Jacob Young (North Rowan) had a 62-yard punt for Fayetteville State in Saturday’s win against Elizabeth City State.

Young averaged 45.7 yards per punt and kicked seven extra points.

Brenden Westbrook (Carson) made 16 tackles, including one for loss, for Catawba in Saturday’s 13-10 loss to Wingate.

Westbrook, a sophomore free safety, has 31 tackles for the season to lead the Indians.

Eric Gibson (North Rowan), Steven Thurston (North Rowan) and Christian Bennett (East Rowan) had one tackle apiece for the Indians.

Freshman Nautica Patterson (North Rowan) made four tackles, two for loss, in Greensboro’s win against Gallaudet on Saturday.

 

Women’s tennis

Freshman Payton Holt (West Rowan) won two matches in the  ITA South Region Championships in  Mount Berry, Ga., and tied for third.

Margaret Correll (Carson) won in singles and doubles as Brevard beat Pfeiffer 8-1 on Sunday.

It was the last fall match for Brevard. The Tornados will return to action in February.

 

Men’s cross country

In Friday’s 8K Virginia-Panorama Farms Cross Country Invitational, Charlotte’s Zachary Marchinko (Carson) ran 24:37 and finished 19th. He helped the 49ers finish third.

Sean Incardona (East Rowan) ran 27:06 in Friday’s 8K Queen City Invitational and was the second runner for the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears.

 

Volleyball

Catawba’s Morgan Hester (Carson) had 29 assists and eight digs in a sweep of UVA-Wise on Friday.
