Area Sports: West volleyball, Salisbury tennis still undefeated

West Rowan’s second-ranked volleyball team stayed undefeated on Monday with a 25-14, 25-7 and 25-22 win at Lake Norman on Monday.

West (8-0) is home against Davie tonight.

High school soccer

Salisbury improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Central Carolina Conference with Monday’s 7-2 win against Lexington.

Salisbury got on the board less than three minutes into the match and three times in the first eight minutes to take charge.

Scoring for the Hornets were Christopher Portillo (two goals), Joshua Portillo, Brayan Aviles, Juan Salazar, Hugo Trujillo and Dennis Anaya.  Assists were credited to Joshua Portillo, Trujillo, Aviles, Salazar, and Irvin Almaraz.

Salisbury got excellent play in the second half from keeper Jude Lockhart, Will Webb and Gabriel Fuentes-Reyes.

Next for Salisbury is a CCC match Wednesday vs. Central Davidson at 6 p.m.

High school tennis

Salisbury rolled to a 9-0 Central Carolina Conference win against Lexington on Monday.

Winning in singles for the Hornets (5-0) were Lillie Rusher, Meredith Burton, Margaret Thurman, Sophie Chmiel, Kate Burton and Abbey Lawson.

Rusher/Thurman, the Burtons and Chmiel/Lawson were winning doubles teams.

High school golf

South Iredell shot 133 to win the North Piedmont Conference girls golf match at Twin Oaks on Monday.

East Rowan shot 136 for second place. Lexie Miller led the Mustangs with a 43, while Carlee Patterson shot 44 and Emma Callahan shot 49.

Carson’s Sophia Brown shot 45.  Gabrielle Blabon led West Rowan.

Basketball

Dayjuwon Cooke (North Rowan) will play for the nationally ranked post-graduate basketball team at Believe Academy in Rock Hill, S.C., near Winthrop.

College cross country

Catawba’s cross country teams opened with second-place finishes in the Fleet Feet Invitational in Salisbury.

Catawba’s Hannah Mercer and Ethan Bemis placed second individually.

Freshman Madison Lowery (South Rowan) was 10th in her college debut in the women’s race.

College football

Freshman linebacker Nautica Patterson (North Rowan) had four tackles and two pass breakups in his college debut for Greensboro on Saturday.

Kortez Weeks (West Rowan) caught a touchdown pass for Elon in a 35-28 win against The Citadel.

Sandon McCoy (A.L. Brown) scored a touchdown for Army in an overtime loss to Michigan.

JaVon Lofton (West Rowan) made five tackles in an Averett win. Tywun Rivens (Salisbury) had five tackles in a Campbell victory, and Wesley Porter (East Rowan) made an interception in Sewanee’s opener.

College volleyball

Freshman Baleigh Hill (East Rowan) had 35 digs in her first two matches for Barton.

Lindsay Elmore (Carson) had 17 kills as Queens got off to a 3-1 start.

 

Sacred Heart athletics

Sacred Heart’s cross country team ran in a middle school meet in Winston Salem with Summit School, Cornerstone Baptist, St. Pius and Redeemer.

Sacred Heart’s  Gray Goodman and Braulio Mercado finished ninth and 10th out of 35 boys.   

Sacred Heart’s Emma Brown finished sixth, Angie Landaverde finished 7th, and Marion Blake  was eighth out of 48 girls.

Sacred Heart hosted a cross county meet with Erwin,  St. Pius and Blessed Sacrament.

Erwin’s Leah Edwards won in 15:24. Erwin’s Sadie Featherstone ran 15:57 for second. Sacred Heart’s Emma Brown was third in 16:16. Erwin’s team won, with Sacred  Heart second.

Sacred Heart’s Braulio Mercado was third in the boys race in 13:56. Sacred Heart won the team scoring.

Sacred Heart’s girls tennis team defeated South Davie 9-0.  Lauren Childress, Rachel Flynn, Eva Lamanno, Annie Tadiello, Ella Cooler, Emma Rose Dishman and Mayla Brinkley had wins for the Dolphins.

Sacred Heart’s  jayvee soccer team tied Statesville Christian 4-4.

Scoring goals for the Dolphins were Harrison Banish, Kevin Bonilla, Jaime Tavira and Henry Austin.  Leo Mercado and Will Walters played great defense.  Mikko Zaldivar was outstanding in goal.

Bonilla scored for Sacred Heart in a 5-1 loss to Salisbury Academy. Kate Donaldson assisted.

Sacred Heart’s varsity soccer team defeated  Statesville Christian 2-1.  Jonah Sithong scored both goals. Jacob Shores had two assists. Kaiden Dulkoski played well in goal.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee volleyball team defeated Statesville Christian 25-12 and 25-15.  Raegan Glenn, Jissele Garcia,  Mayla Brinkley and Jasmine Garcia were standouts.

Sacred Heart’s varsity volleyball team defeated Statesville Christian 25-17 and 25-9.

  Angie Landaverde served seven straight points, and Emma Bloom served nine in a row.

Women’s golf

Catawba is in second place after Monday’s opening round of the Anderson Invitational at  Cobb’s Glen Country Club.

Catawba posted a 321 to trail Anderson by 14 shots.

Sandra Brink led Catawba in the first round with a 3-over-par 75.

College football

Despite a loss to Duke, North Carolina A&T stayed No. 1 in the HBCU Coaches Poll and Media Poll.

Bethune-Cookman amd Alcorn State are second and third in both polls.

Wingate quarterback Shaw Crocker, Carson-Newman linebacker Rondrow Peebles and UVa.-Wise kick returner  Demetrius Mann are the South Atlantic Conference players of the week.

High school soccer

Elijah Luna and Jaxon Mastranunzio scored for East Rowan in Monday’s 4-2 loss to Mount Pleasant.

Mastranunzio assisted on Luna’ goal.

Jayvee volleyball

Carson won against South Rowan 25-15 and 25-15 on Monday.

Ava Huffman and McKinley Faw had seven digs for the Raiders. Emma Owens had five assists.
