Area Sports: North volleyball wins, ends long streak

North Rowan’s volleyball team beat Albemarle 25-17, 25-18, 18-25 and 25-13 in Yadkin Valley Conference play on Tuesday.

North won its season opener and ended a 42-match losing streak that dated back to 2016.

Roziah Ellis led the Cavaliers in kills with eight.

Sage Jensen, Anna Everhart and Madisyn Smith led in service points. Chloee Stoner led the Cavaliers in  serve-receives.

It was the first win for new North head coach Josh Yoder.

West Rowan opened with a 25-16, 25-18 and 25-23 win against West Iredell on Tuesday in Mount Ulla.

Tori Hester had 12 kills. KK Dowling had 10 kills and 10 digs. Carly Stiller had five kills. Kelcie Love had seven kills.

Allison Ennis had four kills, 12 digs and 27 assists. Brooke Kennerly had nine digs, and Ashlee Ennis had seven digs.

In East Rowan’s loss to South Rowan on Monday, Zoe Larson had 29 assists. Hannah Larson had nine kills. Mikayla Tucker led in digs with nine.

Leah Hinceman had seven kills and two blocks. Emma Collins had two aces.

East Rowan won against Concord on Tuesday 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18.

South Rowan (2-0) rolled against East Davidson 25-16, 25-10 and 25-9 in a Central Carolina Conference match on Tuesday.

Kira Rymer had 17 kills and 14 assists. Anna Rymer had 10 kills and 14 assists.

Payton Black had 15 digs. Ashlyn Faw had nine digs and four aces.

Salisbury lost 25-9, 16-25, 25-21 and 25-14 to Thomasville in CCC action on Tuesday.

JV volleyball

Kali Nelson had 14 kills and 15 digs as South Rowan beat East Davidson 26-24, 20-25 and 15-12. Caroline Barbee  nine digs.

Emma Owens had 19 assists.

West Rowan won 25-22 and 25-11 against West Iredell.

Noe Gaeta had 14 assists, three aces and three kills. Madelyn VonCanon had seven kills and two aces. Mia Arnsten had three kills.

HS soccer

Concord beat West Rowan 10-1 on Tuesday.

West is home tonight against Central Davidson.

MS softball

Katie Peeler struck out 10 batters as North Rowan Middle topped Knox 18-3.

Peeler, Kayla Craven and Alyvia Kelley had three hits. Taylor Kelley and Taylor Parks had two hits.

Kennedi Fisher homered for Knox.

Catawba team store

The Catawba College football team store is open to the public for this week only.

This is a first for the football team and part of the sales will go to help support the entire athletics department.

All orders will be delivered the third week of the season and all sales are final and no exchanges/returns will be made.

Among the items offered, some will include those for the 1999 Catawba football team reunion/celebration for at Homecoming, Oct. 25-26.

Catawba worked with Jordan Arnold of BrandRPM, to set up the team store, which is available at https://catawba-football-fan-store.rpmstores.com.

Local golf

Sixty-eight GARS members  played golf at the Revival at the Crescent.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Gary Schenk with a net of 63.30.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Ted Weant with a net of 62.85.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Linn Safley with a net of 62.61.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Frank Rowell with a net of 62.00.

Low gross score was a 71 shot by Bernard Caldwell and low net was won by Frank Rowell.

Two members shot their age.  Caldwell, 71, shot a 71 and Frank Masingo, 83, and 81.

Franklin Ford and Tommy Lambert eagled the par-5 No. 14 hole.

There are 115 Labor Day teams attempting to qualify  from the black tees for the Open Divison.

The low 16  teams will play in the Championship Flight and the next 64 will be in one of eight Open Flights.

There will be three Senior Flights (55+) playing from the white tees. There are 26 teams trying to qualify for 24 spots.

The Super Senior Division (65+) will feature a Championship Flight playing from the gold tees.   Fifteen teams will be fighting it out for the eight spots in the championship.

  The Women’s Division has 8  entries. Those teams will play qualifying rounds for match play seeding.

In the 11th Jimmy Anderson Boys Invitational in Jacksonville, Cannon School’s Charlie Barr shot 74-80 — 154 and tied for 30th. East Rowan’s Austin Miller also tied for 30th, shooting 77-77 — 154.

Salisbury’s Hank Robins tied for 52nd with 84-78 — 162. Salisbury’s Will Fowler shot 85-81 — 166.

  The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played with a regular format on Tuesday.

Kristi Laton had low gross. Susan Morris had low net for the First Flight.

Eileen Full had low net for the Second Flight. Monica Green had second low net.

Intimidators

ROME, Ga.    Shea Langeliers had four hits, while Justin Dean and Brendan Venter recorded three apiece as the Rome Braves defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 14-4 on Tuesday.

Langeliers singled four times, scoring four runs.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, Kannapolis tied the game when Tyler Osik drew a bases-loaded walk and Ramon Beltre hit an RBI single.

Rome answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs to take the lead. Jeremy Fernandez hit a two-run double and then scored on a double by Venter en route to the three-run lead.

Rome later scored in four additional innings, including a four-run seventh, when Bryce Ball hit a solo home run to help put the game out of reach.

Tanner Lawson (4-6) got the win in relief while Kannapolis starter Davis Martin (7-9) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.

Legion baseball

The American Legion World Series championship game in Shelby was suspended by weather on Tuesday and will be resumed early today.

North Dakota leads Idaho 2-1  in the second inning.
