VFW Post 3006 Auxiliary donates backpacks, school supplies to Isenberg

On July 30, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3006 Auxiliary in Salisbury delivered 40 backpacks filled with school supplies to Isenberg Elementary School.

The bags, containing all the necessities needed to start the school year off right, were presented to Principal Marvin Moore. Danette Granberry, auxiliary president, and two of her officers, Lisa Curtis and Teresa Miller, delivered the backpacks to the school, which Moore will make available to any of his students.

School supply drive to benefit Landis Elementary, Corriher-Lipe Middle, South Rowan High

LANDIS – A school supply drive benefiting Landis Elementary, Corriher-Lipe Middle School and South Rowan High School will be held Saturday in the Home Run Shell Station parking lot at 100 W. Ryder Ave. in Landis

Organizers will collect the following items from 1 to 3 p.m.: pencils, block erasers, crayons, notebook paper, composition notebooks, glue sticks, pocket folders, ink pens (black or blue ink), colored pencils, highlighters, dry-erase markers, tissues, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, Ziploc bags, and Post-it notes.

Rowan-Cabarrus holds first official ESL graduation

SALISBURY – Rowan-Cabarrus Community College recently held its first graduation ceremony for students completing the English as a Second Language program. It was held at the north campus in Salisbury.

Graduates were Margarita Alvarez Carranza, Tolentino Aviles Vance’s, Katherine Beltran Montoya, Pela Cruz Baracoa, Claudia Razo de Ibanez, Oliva Escobar Torres, Sonia Estrada Toledo, Thong my Inthavong, Angelia Jimenez Camacho, Marina Lahaina, Brasilia Lopez Flores, Maribel Mindanao Silva, Arianna Marti Garcia, Amy Mejia, Carlos Manuel Mercedes Kelly, Katy Moreno Moreno, Benito Mosso, Jesus Ordonez Valdez, Lilia Perez Alvarez, Teresita Romero Salazar, Maria Isabel Sanchez, Mageli Solano, and Nai Ling Tucker. Marina Ladyhina was also recognized for being inducted into the National Adult Honor Society. Diplomas were presented by ESL lead instructor Roberta Mahatha and instructor Lauren Hatchett.

“You are an inspiration; never stop learning,” said speaker Mary Jane Hartley, a career and college readiness instructor at Rowan-Cabarrus. She quoted Ford Motor Co. founder Henry Ford: “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.”

The 2018-19 ESL graduates are natives of China, Cuba, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and the Ukraine.

Hood Theological Seminary to host inaugural seminar and worship service

Hood Theological Seminary’s International Center of Faith, Science and History will present its inaugural seminar and worship service from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 13. The keynote speaker will be Charles H. Long, and the guest speaker is the Rev. Teresa Fry Brown. A panel of experts will also participate.

The seminar is titled “The Matrix and Memory of Water: Commemorating a 400 Year Sojourn Through Faith, Science, and History in America.” It will be in the Albert J.D. Aymer Center and is open to the public.

Long is an emeritus professor of religious studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara and a former professor of religion at the universities of Chicago, North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Duke and Syracuse. Considered the founder and pre-eminent advocate of the study of black religion, Long was exploring religion and colonialism and the importance of Afro-American religion as early as the 1960s and early 1970s. His voice will help the International Center of Faith, Science and History envision its role and responsibility in navigating the nexus of faith and science at a historically black theological institution.   

The panelists include Theodore Walker, professor, SMU/Perkins School of Theology; Josette Wilkes, assistant professor, Livingstone College; and Carol T. Mitchell, professor emerita, office of STEM education, University of Nebraska.

Brown is the Bandy professor of preaching at Candler School of Theology and executive director for research and scholarship and historiographer for AME Church. She holds the office of the Bandy chair in preaching, which is considered by many to be the premier chair in homiletics in the country. Selected from a national pool of candidates, Brown is Candler’s fourth Bandy Professor.

South Rowan High School seniors kick off school year with afternoon of service

ROCKWELL – A new priority for students at South Rowan High School this school year is community service.

That service shined on the campus of Nazareth Child and Family Connection Friday as a large group of South Rowan seniors spent a part of the afternoon hard at work on the Nazareth grounds. They spread four dump trucks of mulch around trees and in flower gardens, trimmed bushes and helped with a general cleanup.

During the first three days of school, seniors volunteered at 10 community sites, putting in more than 500 hours of community service. Mulch for the project was donated by Yarbrough Tree Service.

Salem Lutheran awards 2019 scholarship

Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church recently awarded the Hubert and Allie Shulenburger Scholarship. Recipients must have been members of Salem for at least two years, and awards may be made based on merit and need.   

Kendyl Gregory was the 2019 recipient. She is a 2019 graduate of West Rowan High School. She plans to attend Rowan-Cabarrus Community College to get her associate degree in science, then transfer to Coastal Carolina for Marine Biology. Gregory is the daughter of Bubba and Tonya Gregory.
