EAST SPENCER – The East Spencer Board of Aldermen did not reach a decision about hiring a new town administrator after a closed meeting on Thursday.

The board had been in negotiations to hire an administrator after the resignation of its most recent interim administrator earlier this year.

The board met Thursday with East Spencer native Darrell Foxx, who has most recently lived in Dubai, a city in the Middle Eastern country of the United Arab Emirates. Foxx has since moved back to his hometown.

Foxx is in consideration for the permanent position.

Foxx is the uncle of Alderman Tony Hillian, who recently announced that he is running for mayor.

The board held a two-hour meeting on July 26 and recessed it to continue negotiations. Foxx said afterward that the board made an offer to him and he made a counteroffer.

The board met Thursday for nearly an hour, calling Foxx into the meeting room at one point. They reopened the meeting without making a decision.

Mayor Barbara Mallett said the board made no decisions Thursday and continued the meeting to a regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Foxx later told the Post that he would give the board his answer to the job offer at the Monday meeting.

In April, the board hired former Granite Quarry Town Manager Phil Conrad as its interim administrator for a term that is set to expire this month.

The previous interim administrator, F.E. Isenhour, resigned in March. He had been interim administrator since December 2016 and, before that, had been the town planner since 2014.

The previous town administrator, David Jaynes, was on the job 15 months before he resigned.

In 2015, Macon Sammons Jr. stepped down from the job to become grants and special projects coordinator, a position he maintains in today. Sammons was hired in 2011 after the manager before him, Donnie Jones, left in 2010 for health reasons. Jones had been on the job for only about a year.

In May 2009, the board fired Richard Hunter because it said it wanted someone more accessible. Hunter had commuted from Durham for four years.

The board recessed Thursday’s meeting until 6:30 p.m. Monday at Town Hall, 105 S. Long St.
