Livingstone College’s department of athletics recognizes the need to provide quality programming for youths in the community.

During the week of July 8-12, the John Daniels Tennis Skills Summer Youth Camp provided boys and girls ages 12-14 a free opportunity to learn the fundamental skills of tennis. Participants learned proper grips, footwork, strokes, volleys, and serves during a series of drills and match play, designed to teach skills in a fun-filled learning environment.

“On the first day, I was a bit nervous, but near the end of the camp, I understood the game more and this increased my confidence to play. I’m going to try out for the tennis team at my new school,” said rising sixth-grader Seven-Hazel Boone.

In addition to developing a love for tennis, student athletes are exposed to the rules and etiquette of the game and its history.

“Developing tennis in our youth will maintain a viable tennis team at Livingstone,” said head women’s tennis team coach Gwendolyn Jackson. “We want to be known in the community for tennis development and we want our reputation to be excellence in tennis. This camp helps to instill our brand.”

The camp is named for former Livingstone tennis player John Daniels, who also volunteers at the camp. Daniels said he was exposed to tennis as a student at Livingstone in 1963.

“Youth should learn other sports besides basketball and football,” Daniels said. “Tennis gives them new rules, improves hand-and-eye coordination and so much more. Our main focus is to develop consistent, well-rounded tennis players.”

At the closing of the camp, participants engaged in a skills and technique demonstration and received a certificate of completion and tennis supplies to continue playing the sport.
