Area Sports Briefs: South rained out, plays Wednesday at 1 p.m.

South Rowan’s Junior Legion state championship game against R-S Central was postponed due to weather on Tuesday and was rescheduled for this afternoon at 1 p.m. at Finch Field in Thomasville.

South lost to R-S Central 12-11 in extra innings in pool play, but has won its last three games.

South is trying to become the first Rowan team to win the Junior Legion state tournament.

Local golf

Ron Rutledge of Salisbury made a hole-in-one at McCanless on Monday.

Rutledge aced the 115-yard No. 6 hole with a sand wedge.

It was the first hole-in-one for the 71-year-old Rutledge, who has been playing golf 40 years.

Rutledge was playing with Bill Baggett, Dan Luce  and Chris Mauldin.

Grace Yatawara (Salisbury, ECU) is playing in the Ladies National Golf Association Championship at the Golf Club of Tennessee on July 29-Aug. 1.

Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) is playing in the  Porter Cup Tournament, which starts today and will include some of the world’s top amateurs.

The  tournament is held at the Niagara Falls Country Club through July 27.

Seventy-one GARS members played the second round of their annual ABCD Tournament at the Revival at the Crescent.

‘A’ Flight winner was Gary Schenk with a net of 66.09. ‘A’ Flight low gross winner was Edgar Osborne.

‘B’ Flight winner was Ray Pope with a net of 63.85. ‘B’ Flight low gross winner was Mike Williams.

‘C’ Flight winner was Carl Moore with a net of 63.74. ‘C’ Flight low gross winner was Thomas Dodge.

‘D’ Flight winner was Ralph Luther with a net of 61.62. ‘D’ Flight low gross winner was Frank Rowell.

Osborne shot low gross with a 76 and Luther won low net.   Frank Masingo, 83, shot an 83 and J.C. Ritchie, 94, shot an 86.

HS football

Progress continues on installing synthetic turf at Kannapolis Memorial Stadium.

The project began   July 9 and is on track to be completed before the opening kickoff of the season.

A.L. Brown opens at home against Ashbrook on Aug. 30.

Intimidators

LEXINGTON, Ky.  — Rubendy Jaquez scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice in the ninth inning, as the Lexington Legends beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-4 on Tuesday.

Jaquez scored the game-winning run after he led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a strikeout by Brhet Bewley.

The Legends scored two runs in the eighth before Kannapolis answered in the next half-inning when Andrew Vaughn scored on a groundout to tie the game 4-4.

Lexington starter Charlie Neuweiler went eight innings, allowing three runs and six hits. He also struck out five and walked one. Brandon Marklund (2-0) got the win in relief while Lane Ramsey (3-5) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game.

Corey Zangari hit two solo home runs for the Intimidators.

Legion baseball

Davidson County starts pool play on Friday in the state tournament against  Fuquay-Varina at 1:30 p.m. Randolph County plays Union County at 4:30 p.m.
