SALISBURY — A local man was charged with possession of cocaine and served with arrest warrants stemming from a separate incident after police checked his license plate.

Charles Reginald Springs, 63, of the 1100 block of South Fulton Street, Apartment A, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, according to the Salisbury Police Department.

Arrest warrants for Springs were outstanding related to a June 2 incident at Walmart. He was charged with felony possession of burglary tools, four counts of preventing activation of an anti-shoplifting device, and felony larceny.

According to a police report, an officer stopped a Cadillac at West Innes and Institute streets. The officer determined that there were active warrants for the arrest of the driver, Springs.

Springs confirmed his identity and was searched. The officer found a plastic bag with a “rock-like” substance believed to be crack cocaine inside his pocket watch, authorities said.

A passenger in the car was released.

Springs remains in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $12,500 secured bond.

Springs has previous convictions for felony assault by strangulation; robbery with a dangerous weapon; felony larceny; felony breaking and entering; armed robbery; larceny of a motor vehicle; and forgery.
