The Salisbury Elks Lodge No. 699 selected five local high school seniors to receive college scholarships starting in the fall of 2019.  Gail Sce, Scholarship Chairperson for the annual awards, says the student applications are very impressive.

“Our committee reviews and scores the applicants based on leadership, academics and community service.  Volunteering in the community, including with our local Elks’ events, is an important area of consideration,” said Sce, “We have many opportunities for young people to help with fundraising, our work with Nazareth Children’s Home, youth substance use prevention and our annual basketball Hoop Shoot event.”

Jared Hensley from North Rowan High School was chosen as one of the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Students.  He will receive a $4,000 scholarship paid in the amount of $1,000 for the next four years. Hensley will attend the University of Michigan and plans to major in Engineering.

Ada Wong was awarded a $1,000 Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student scholarship. Wong, a senior at J.C. Carson High School, plans to attend Duke University to study Computer Science.

There were three winners of the $1,000 Don Stout Memorial Scholarship.  Stout was a lifelong educator in the Rowan Salisbury School system and a valued member of Salisbury Elks No. 699.  The local lodge hosts its Don Stout Memorial golf tournament in the fall of each year to raise money for the scholarship program.

Kayla Blaisure, a senior at Graystone Academy, will apply her scholarship to the University of North  Carolina at Charlotte where she plans to major in Business. Landon Ketchie from East Rowan High School plans to attend Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. Ian C.
