Former East Rowan standout Ike Freeman and  Catawba College closer Peyton Williams were selected  on Wednesday, the third day of the MLB draft.

Freeman, a UNC junior infielder, was drafted as a shortstop by the Cleveland Indians in the 14th round. He was the 430th player chosen.

As a senior at East in 2016, Freeman batted .518 with 10 doubles, five homers and 25 RBIs. He was the winner of the Mark Norris Memorial Award as the Rowan County Player of the Year.

Freeman was a part-time player as a UNC freshman and struggled to a .174 batting average.

He surprisingly won the shortstop job as a sophomore and produced a breakout season. He hit .305 with three homers and 51 RBIs  while playing in 64 games.

This season he’s batting .279 with six homers and 39 RBIs.

He makes a lot of contact and has walked more times than he’s struck out the last two seasons. His on-base percentage this season is .415.

Freeman  (5-10, 199 pounds) will turn 21 on June 17.

UNC starts play as a Super Regional host on Saturday. The 14th-ranked Tar Heels will be taking on Auburn.

A right-handed pitcher, Peyton Williams (6-1, 180) was picked in the 20th round by the Atlanta Braves.

He was a high school standout at East Montgomery and was a two-time league player of the year.

He starred  as a second baseman/pitcher for the Randolph County American Legion team that reached the World Series in 2017.

The right-hander  focused on pitching as a college freshman for Pfeiffer and was 2-0 with seven saves.

After transferring to Catawba for his sophomore season, he turned in a terrific year, with a 4-1 record and 12 saves.

He had a 2.43 ERA to lead the staff and struck out 55 batters in 37 innings.

Williams was Catawba’s hardest-thrower — mid-90s — and the coaching staff anticipated that he’d be drafted.

College sophomores at four-year schools aren’t normally eligible for the draft, but Williams turned 21 in May and 21-year-olds are draftable.

Junior Legion

East Rowan won against South Rowan on Wednesday, 6-5.

Griffin Warden and Austin Faulk drove in two runs for East. Chance Mako pitched brilliantly for six innings.

Jaxon Trexler had a walk-off hit with Dylan Valley dodging the tag at home.

South rallied to tie the game at 5-all with four runs in the top of the seventh seventh.

Patrick Holden had three RBIs for South.

Jake Poris pitched West Rowan Junior Legion to an 11-1 win against East Davidson on Tuesday.

Ben Sweet went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Hunter Watts had two hits and three RBIs. Andrew Kennerly had two hits and three RBIs. Zander Burton had two hits.

Legion baseball

Rowan County’s game on Wednesday was postponed by weather.

Rowan is scheduled to play High Point tonight at Finch Field in Thomasville.

 

Local golf

In the North Carolina Open at Trump National, Davis Richards (South Rowan, N.C. State) shot a second-round 69 and is tied for 20th at 147. He shot 78 the first day.

Richards has made three eagles.

Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) made the cut in the three-round event, shooting 77-75 — 152.

East Carolina’s Blake Taylor leads the tournament at 70-69 — 139.

  

Livingstone camps

SALISBURY­- Livingstone College’s athletic department is offering multiple camps for ages 7-18 in boys basketball, football, golf, softball, volleyball and tennis.

Golf (boys and girls)

Kids camp for ages 7-10 is on June 10-11.

Youth camp for  ages 11-14 is on June 12-13.

Both camps provide golf clubs, balls and snacks for $40 per camper.

Volleyball

LC’s women’s team will host a one-day camp on June 20 for grades 3-7 at New  Trent Gym.

A one-day camp for grades 8-12 will be held on June 21. Cost is $25. Cost does not include lunch, but students will be able to buy lunch at the college cafeteria.

A two-day volleyball camp will be held on July 15-16.  The camp is designed for grades 3-12. Cost is $50.

A sibling discount is available at $45 for both days for two siblings and $40 for three siblings.

Basketball

The men’s basketball team will host camps at New Trent Gym on June 24-28 and July 8-12 for grades 3-8.

Cost is $150 per camper per session with a sibling discount. Lunch is provided. Campers will receive a T-shirt. An awards ceremony will be held on the last day of camp.

Tennis

The Annual John Daniels Tennis Skills Summer Youth Camp will be held July 9-12  for ages 12-14. The camp is free, but bring your racket. Beverages and snacks will be provided.

Football

  The LC football program will host its Battle at the Stone 7-on-7 Passing Camp on July 13 at Alumni Memorial Stadium.

The camp is for high school students.  Cost   is $150 per team. Lunch will be provided.

Parks and Rec

Salisbury Parks and Recreation announced dates for summer sports camps.

All Camps are $30 per participant.
