DAVIDSON COUNTY — N.C. Highway Patrol officials have identified two drivers killed in a head-on collision Monday evening on Wilcox Way at the Davidson-Rowan County line.

Jerri Ann Rankin, 39, of Lexington, was traveling north in a 2015 Chevrolet Malibu when the vehicle went left of the center line. She collided with a 2018 Toyota Camry driven by Mary Grace Shives, 29, of Linwood, according to Trooper Ned Moultrie.

Rankin’s vehicle went off the road to the right, struck a guardrail and stopped in the middle of the road. Shives’ vehicle ran off the road to the right and struck the guardrail.

The crash occurred at 5:07 p.m. on the U.S. 29 bridge near the future Yadkin River Park.

Rankin was alone in her vehicle.

William Shives, 64, of Kannapolis, who is believed to be Mary Shives’ father, was a passenger in her vehicle. A 1-year-old child was in a car seat in the back, Moultrie said.

William Shives was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with serious injuries. The child was secured and was not hurt, Moultrie said.

The crash remains under investigation, including why Rankin traveled left of center and collided with the Camry. The collision is being investigated by Trooper B.C. Deal.
