Wild Bill Corriher turns 90
Wild Bill Corriher, along with almost 100 others, helped him celebrate his 90th birthday on Saturday, May 18. They gathered at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ’s Activity Center in China Grove. Friends and family from across the county and state came to celebrate his monumental day. Gary’s Bar-B-Q catered the event.

Local students perform in National Guild of Piano Teachers’ Audition

CHINA GROVE — The National Guild of Piano Teachers’ Audition was held at China Grove First Baptist Church on May 9-10.
Adjudicator was Joanne West of Shallotte. A graduate of Mars Hill University, Mrs. West has been a music teacher for more than 50 years, having taught piano, voice, organ and choirs in Florida, North and South Carolina, and Virginia.
The following piano teachers and their students participated:
Dawn Merrell (Salisbury): Abbey and Morgan Deaton;
Tina Brown (Rockwell): Hanna Davis;
Hannah Babcock (Salisbury): Emerson, Carson, Garrison Raper and Shelby Harrison;
Marsha K. Carter (China Grove): Riley Mabe, Melena Ketner, Nadiya Wilson, Kandus and Nathaniel Kimball, Molly Burgess, Drew Huffman, Micah McNeil, Savanna Bancroft, Andrew Carter, Ellison and Noah Dendy, Marielle Gordon, Salem Fleming, Will Bivens, Addisyn Keen, Braelyn Nichols, Molly Hale, Abby Rodgers, Aden Castor, Finnley, Sawyer and Ayden Basinger.
Students are judged on technique, dynamics, memory and musicianship. Repertoire classifications, in addition to memorization, included hobbyist, duets, ensemble and jazz/pop auditions.
Each student receives a report card, a certificate and a bronze, silver or gold award pin, depending on the number of pieces performed.
The following students from the studio of Marsha Carter were recognized for performing 10 memorized pieces for seven years: Ayden Basinger and Addisyn Keen; and Nadiya Wilson for eight years.
