From staff reports

Third-seeded Catawba plays its first baseball game in the NCAA Division II Championships in Cary today against the sixth-seeded UC San Diego Tritons.

First pitch is at 3 p.m.

Catawba won the Southeast Region, while UC San Diego (40-14) won its third straight West Region championship.

Play at the eight-team, double-elimination tournament  at the USA Baseball National Training Complex i continues through June 8.

NCAA.com live streams the games.

Catawba (47-12) is 120 miles from Cary, but, relatively speaking, the Indians will be playing a home game. Catawba should also have a “weather advantage” over most of the teams in the field. The Indians are used to heat and humidity.

Junior lefty Bryan Ketchie (9-1) is the probable starting pitcher for Catawba.

The probable lineup for Catawba is DH Heath Mitchem, shortstop Jeremy Simpson, first baseman Hunter Shepherd, second baseman Joe Butts, third baseman Jackson Raper, catcher Cam Morrison, right fielder Lee Poteat, left fielder Jacob Nester and center fielder Bryce Butler.

Ketchie, Raper and Simpson were named to all-region teams.

The probable pitcher for UC San Diego is  junior right-hander Brandon Weed (10-2), the West Region Pitcher of the Year and a third-team All-American.

Second-seeded Tampa (41-14) and seventh-seeded Mercyhurst (34-14) are the other two teams in Catawba’s bracket.
