A China Grove man was charged with shooting his brother-in-law in both legs after his sister’s wedding, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the men argued before the shooting about writing the words “Just married” on the back of a vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office charged Michael Ray Macy, 50, of the 1300 block of N.C. 153, with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. The victim, Kenneth Wayne Mills, 61, had a gunshot wound in both legs and a wound to the side of his head.

Mills had just been married Saturday, and he and his new wife, Debbie, asked her brother, Michael Macy, to write on the back window of the car they planned to leave the reception in, according to a report.

Before Macy had a chance to write on the car window, he was asked to leave by the venue staff because he’d brought his dog with him. Mills called to ask Macy why he didn’t write on the window, and Macy responded with an expletive, the report said.

The newlyweds drove to Macy’s home, where an argument ensued. Macy pulled a handgun from his back pocket, hit Mills on the side of the head and fired several shots.

Mills was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord.

On Sunday, Macy turned himself in to the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office. Macy has since been released from the Rowan County Detention Center under a $1,000 secured bond.
