MOUNT  PLEASANT — Rowan County  used a four-run fifth inning to snap a 2-all tie and went on to beat Concord 9-5 on the road on Wednesday in American Legion baseball action.

Rowan (2-1) continues to operate with a coaching staff led by Seth Graham and Adam Patterson, as head coach Jim Gantt is still focusing his attention on Catawba’s effort in the Division II playoffs.

Rowan used three pitchers. Daniel Sell, a returner from the 2018 team, shut down Concord early, facing only 10 batters in the first three innings. He allowed two runs in the fourth as Concord tied the game at 2-all. Rowan made Sell the winning pitcher with that four-run fifth that provided a 6-2 cushion.

Olen Stamper pitched the fifth and sixth innings for Rowan. He struggled in the fifth and allowed two runs. He was in serious trouble, but he got a popup and two strikeouts with runners at second and third,. That was the critical moment in Rowan’s win.

Cameron Graham pitched the seventh. He allowed two hits, but he also got a ground-ball double play that helped him escape a potential mess.

Offensively, Rowan was paced by center fielder Wayne Mize, who had a two-run triple in the fifth and a two-run single in the seventh.

Shortstop Steven Smith was on base frequently and scored three runs.

DH Daniel Durham picked up two RBIs on an infield hit in the decisive fifth.

Third baseman Bo Rusher singled home a run in the first inning, while right fielder Jordan Goodine plated a run with a base hit in the sixth.

Catcher JT Fecteau picked up a third-inning RBI when he walked with the bases loaded.

No. 9 batter Larkin Lancaster homered for Concord (2-2), which used five hurlers.

Rowan plays tonight against Kannapolis at Northwest Cabarrus High.

High school baseball

Cameron Clonch and Quin Ferguson homered as Mooresville beat Reagan 9-6  on Wednesday to  sweep their 4A regional championship series.

Nick Merriman pitched into the seventh inning for the Blue Devils.

Carter Boyd and Josh Hartle homered for the Raiders.

High school softball

South Caldwell evened  its regional championship series with Mooresville with a 6-3 win on Wednesday at home.

Hailey Lane, Ellie Goins, Caitlin Mann and Imara Harrell had two hits each for the Blue Devils.

CCC awards

The CCC awards luncheon was held on Wednesday at Davidson County Community College.

College football

Wesley Porter (East Rowan) had a pick-6 and kicked a PAT for Sewanee in a 60-16 win over the Lazio Ducks in Rome.

About 40 Sewanee players and 50 parents took a nine-day trip to Greece and Italy, culminating in a football game.

Catawba lacrosse

  Catawba senior Joe Barber has been selected to play in the USILA Senior All-Star Game. The game will be played on Friday, May 24 at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md.

Fishing

Local fishermen Harrison McCall and Carson Palmer are the  N.C. SAF high school points champions. They’ll  compete in nationals next month on  Lake Pickwick in Florence, Ala.

College signers

South Rowan’s Bryson Bebber signed with Surry Community College.

West Rowan cross country’s Devon Pena signed with Belmont Abbey.

West Rowan’s Carsen Bailey and Jake Perez plan to sign today with  N.C. Wesleyan.

Intimidators

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Lenyn Sosa scored the decisive run on a wild pitch in the third inning, as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Hagerstown Suns 2-1 on Wednesday.

Sosa scored after he reached base with a double and advanced to third on a flyout by Romy Gonzalez.

The wild pitch by Destino scored Sosa to give the Intimidators a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the first, Kannapolis took the lead on a double by Alex Destino that scored Ian Dawkins. Hagerstown answered in the bottom of the inning when Gilbert Lara scored on a passed ball.

Kannapolis right-hander Johan Dominguez (1-2) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing one run on five hits over six innings. Opposing starter Francys Peguero (2-3) took the tough loss.

Lara singled three times for the Suns.
