Food Lion donated 500 million meals to fight hunger 

Food Lion announced May 9 that it has reached its goal of committing 500 million meals by the end of 2020 through the company’s hunger relief initiative, Food Lion Feeds.

“Each of these 500 million meals has helped one of our neighbors who did not know where their next meal would come from — children, seniors, service members, veterans and families across our footprint who were faced with the impossible choices caused by hunger,” said Food Lion President Meg Ham. “We won’t accept that many of our neighbors are food-insecure and struggle to nourish their families, so we felt compelled to take action by uniting with our customers and partners to eliminate the choices families are forced to make when they are hungry.”

To achieve this, the retailer worked with Feeding America and the 30 Feeding America-affiliated food banks across Food Lion’s 10-state service territory to identify opportunities.

“Our commitment to donate 500 million meals was significant, but it was about so much more than a number,” said Ham. “Nourishing our neighbors in the towns and cities we serve is what we do. So, we’re proud of achieving our goal and grateful to our customers and community partners who have helped us achieve it. We also recognize that there is more vital work to be done.”

Hospice Honors recipients must score above the national average in 20 of the 24 quality indicator measures. Surveys and results are collected and tabulated by an independent third party company – HEALTHCAREfirst.

Ahold Delhaize USA Services Company, Retail Business Services, honored with global private brand design awards

SALISBURY — For the second year in a row, the private brand’s team at Retail Business Services, the services company of Ahold Delhaize USA, has been honored with two VERTEX awards for the packaging design of its Taste of Inspirations and Etos private brand products.

The organization received a silver award in the New Brands category for its Taste of Inspirations packaging and design, and a bronze award in the Beauty category for Etos mini bath bombs. The awards were presented at an event held May 1-2 in Charlotte.

Delta Dental Foundation awarded $5,000 to the Rowan County Health Department Smile Center 

Rowan County Health Department Smile Center received a $5,000 Smiles for Kids grant from the Delta Dental Foundation.

The grant helps provide prenatal dental care to women in Rowan County who are uninsured as well as spread education about the importance of good oral health during pregnancy.

“We are grateful for the support of Delta Dental,” said Nina Oliver, health director of the Rowan County Health Department. “With their support, we are able to provide treatment and access to important dental care to a population who would otherwise go without care, which we know it not healthy for both mom and baby.”

The Delta Dental Foundation focused on ensuring that children and adults in North Carolina receive high-quality oral health education and dental care. The grant that the Rowan County Health Department Smile Center received is one of the 19 grants that DDF is donating to these oral health organizations and programs. These grants have totaled to roughly $70,000.

This is the fifth year that the Rowan County Health Department Smile Center has been awarded a Smiles for Kids grant, totaling $17,000 since 2011.

“I’m grateful to the Delta Dental Foundation for their consistent generosity towards the Rowan Count Community,” said Rep. Harry Warren, R-76.

Grant recipients were selected based on criteria that included the number of at-risk children served, the uniqueness of the program, the level of community involvement in the program and the ability to measure results.

“Many communities across North Carolina face challenges when it comes to providing all citizens in need with the oral health care services they require,” Ladig said. “Pregnant women represent a very vulnerable population, and the Smiles for Kids program aims to help organizations like the Rowan County Health Department Smile Center address their needs and close the gap between those with and without access to sufficient oral health care.”

Novant Health athletic trainers present life-saving devices to Rowan-Salisbury Schools.

SALISBURY – Novant Health Sports Medicine team donated six automated external defibrillators (AED) devices to high schools in the Rowan-Salisbury Schools System.

“When a person’s chances of survival drop up to 10 percent a minute until defibrillation, we know AEDs save lives and timely access can make a tremendous difference for student-athletes,” said Bob Casmus, a certified athletic trainer and supervisor of Novant Health’s athletic trainers for the Greater Winston-Salem market.

“Nothing is more important than ensuring all of our student-athletes, in all of our communities, are safe and cared for. These AEDs will enhance and strengthen the emergency action plans for the high school athletic programs,” he said.

This donation follows the official partnership between Novant Health and the RSS system, which began in December 2018 to provide advanced sports medicine care to student-athletes. The partnership puts full-time Novant Health athletic trainers at six high schools (North Rowan High School, South Rowan High School, West Rowan High School, Jesse Carson High School, Salisbury High School) and improves access to various medical services, annual sports physicals, concussion management and other educational opportunities and supplies.
