St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church scholarships have been awarded for 2019-20.

All college scholarships are $500 per semester for a total of $1,000 for the year. Vocational or technical college scholarships are $250 per semester for a total of $500 for the year. The total for scholarships awarded for 2019-20 is $13,000.

The following 14 members of St. Matthew’s are recipients:

• Lily Marie Abernathy, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will Lees-McRae College as a freshman this fall. She plans to major in elementary education. At East Rowan, she was co-captain of the Mustang Regiment color guard. Her parents are Gene and Angie Abernethy of Gold Knob Road in Salisbury. 

• Alexander Calloway Askew, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a senior at Western Carolina University this fall. He plans to major in natural resource conservation management, soil and water. His parents are Paula and David Askew of Hill Road in Gold Hill.

• Granger Patton Askew, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will enter East Carolina University as a freshman this fall. He plans to pursue a degree in finance while majoring in technical systems. At East Rowan, he participated in track, wrestling and football. Granger is an Eagle Scout. His parents are Paula and David Askew of Hill Road in Gold Hill.

• Faith Reanna Blume, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a senior at Appalachian State University this fall. At Appalachian, she is president of the Animal Welfare Club, vice president of Highlands Biology Club and an OEID scholarship recipient. She plans to major in biology. Her parents are Anne and Kevin Blume of Stokes Ferry Road in Gold Hill.

• Macie Grace Curlee, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will enter Wingate University as a freshman this fall. She is undecided about her major but will explore health care studies. At East Rowan, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Junior Civitan Club, Nursing Fundamental and Honors Chorus. Her parents are Donna and Gary Curlee of Black Road in Salisbury.

• Connor Kenneth Erbsen, a graduate of Eastland Junior-Senior High School in Lanark, Illinois, will be a sophomore at Iowa State University this fall. He plans to major is agronomy/agriculture business. At Iowa State, he is a member of the Agronomy Club, Dairy Science Club, Ag Systems Technology Club and Beginning Farmers Network. His mother is Angela Connor-Erbsen of R. Street in Lanark, Illinois.

• Jackson Ross Justus, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a sophomore at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College this fall. He is majoring in art history or business. His parents are Frances and Barry Justus of Adrian Road in Salisbury.

• Jordan Alexandria McCall, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will attend Rowan-County Community College as a junior this fall. She plans to major in business. Her parents are Barry and Lee McCall of Fielderest Drive in Salisbury.

• Jocelyn Page Miller, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will enter the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall as a freshman. At East Rowan, she was a member of the Key Club, Junior Civitan Club, Student Council, National Honor Society, and Sigma Phi Gama. Jocelyn was a junior marshall, a Civitan Scholar and an AP Scholar With Distinction. She was an attendant at Dan Nicholas Park, a dancer at Center Stage Dance Company and a Camp Med participant at Novant Health. Jocelyn plans to major in biology. Her parents are Rhonda and Joe Miller of Bringle Ferry Road in Salisbury.

• Michaela Domicia Patterson, a graduate of Gray Stone Day School, will be a junior at Catawba College this fall. At Catawba, Michaela is in the Honors Program and on the Dean’s List. She is a member of the National Society of Leadership for Success and a supplemental instructor for general chemistry. She plans to major in biochemistry. Her mother is Carol Patterson of Catfish Terrace in Salisbury.

• Amy Payton Rawson, a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, will be a junior at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa this fall. She is a member of Phi Mu fraternity, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Society of Women in Engineering and Dancing Divas treasurer. Payton plans to major in architectural engineering. Her parents are Lisa and Bob Rawson of Gold Hill Road East in Gold Hill.

• Katelyn Marie Sprinkle, a graduate East Rowan High School, will enter the University of North Carolina at Wilmington this fall as a freshman. At East Rowan, Katelyn was a member of the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Sigma Fi Gama, and Key Club. Katelyn was a varsity cheerleader and participated in varsity track and field.  She plans to major in exercise science. Her parents are Carla and Paul Sprinkle of Fox Hollow Lane in Salisbury.

• Sydney Lauren Trexler, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall. She plans to major in advertising and public relations and minor in cognitive science. Her parents are Corey and Tanya Trexler of Lower Palmer Road in Salisbury.

• Victoria Jane Trexler, a graduate of East Rowan High School, will be a sophomore at North Carolina State University this fall. She is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. She plans to major in engineering. Her parents are Lisa and Ty Trexler of Bringle Ferry Road in Richfield.
