Area Sports: South’s Jackson, Salisbury’s Robins qualify for state golf

PILOT MOUNTAIN —  The 2A Midwest Regional  golf tournament was held at Pilot Knob on Monday.

Three teams (Lake Norman Charter, Forbush and East Lincoln) and the top six individuals not on one of those teams advanced to state competition at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines on May 13-14.

South Rowan’s Andrew Jackson qualified for the state tournament as an individual. He shot 75.

Salisbury’s Hank Robins shot 77 and took the last   of the six individual berths for the state tournament  in a playoff with South Rowan’s Andrew Coward and Oak Grove’s Grady Newton.

The 3A Midwest Regional will be held today at The Club at Irish Creek.

The field will include the West Rowan and East Rowan teams, as well as individuals from Carson and A.L. Brown.

High school tennis

Salisbury is home today at 4:30 p.m. against Newton-Conover in the second round of the 2A dual team state playoffs.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS — Tim Brennan tossed a two-hit complete game, leading the Hickory Crawdads to a 2-1 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday.

Brennan (2-1) allowed one run while striking out seven to get the win.

Catawba hoops camp

Catawba men’s basketball has announced its summer camp dates.

The staff will host three different types of camps this summer— team camp, individual camp and elite camp.

TEAM CAMP (Tuesday, June 25 – Sunday, June 30)

The team camp has day and overnight options. It is open to varsity, junior varsity and middle school teams. For pricing and information on registering your team, call or email Coach Rob Perron for details.

INDIVIDUAL CAMP (Monday, July 8 – Thursday, July 11)

The individual camp will be four days of hard work, skill development, competitive games, and fun! It is open for boys grades K-8th grade and girls K-2nd grade.

Camp runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday.  Cost of the camp is $125 and each camper will receive a  free T-shirt and lunch Monday-Wednesday.

ELITE CAMP

The Elite Camp is a one-day  camp for the serious player with aspirations of playing college basketball.

It is for rising eighth grade to 12th grade boys. Cost is $70 and a free T-shirt is included.

Catawba softball 

Catawba softball will offer a pair of camps this summer.

One is a youth camp for ages 6-12 that will run from June 24 to June 27.

The second is Elite Camp for ages 14-18 and will run from July 15 to July 18.

Youth camp will run from 9 a.m. until noon, while the Elite Camp will be 9 a.m. to p.m.

Cost of each camp is $100 and an extra $25 if registering after the deadline. Deadline for the youth camp is June 7 and June 28 for the Elite Camp.

Catawba College staff and team members will be conducting the camp and leading players through drills during a college style practice during camp.

Instruction will be provided in throwing, catching, infield, outfield, hitting, agility, base running, sliding and position work. Please bring your bat, glove, helmet, cleats and tennis/turf shoes. If you are a catcher, you need to bring your catching gear.

SAC men’s lacrosse

Wingate and Queens earned bids to the South Regional.

Wingate is seeded fifth, while Queens is seeded sixth.

SAC softball

Five South Atlantic Conference softball teams  earned a bid to the  Southeast Regional.

Carson-Newman is a host team and is seeded No. 2. Lincoln Memorial is seeded third, with Coker fourth,  Wingate sixth, and Anderson seventh.

Minor leagues

Owen White (Carson) had Tommy John surgery on Wednesday  at TMI Sports Medicine’s surgery center in Arlington, Texas.

Dr. Keith Meister, the Texas Rangers’ director of medical services, operated.

Bryan Blanton (Catawba) had a strong outing on Monday for the Tampa Tarpons in the Florida State League. Blanton struck out three in 3 1/3 innings. He allowed two hits and no earned runs.

Craig Brooks (Catawba) has dominated as a relief pitcher for the Double-A Tennessee Smokies.

After 10 outings, Brooks has an ERA of 0.77. He’s struck out 18 while allowing five hits. He has five saves.
