The second annual Salisbury Civitan Softball Tournament will be held today and Friday (weather permitting) at Salisbury Community Park.

Fields 1 and 3 will be in use.

The tourney field includes North  Piedmont Conference champ West Rowan, South Piedmont Conference champ Central Cabarrus and a Carson team that reached the state’s Final Four a year ago.

Teams have been divided into red and blue divisions. Divison champs will meet at 7 p.m. for the tournament championship on Friday.

Thursday’s games:

West Rowan vs. Cox Mill and Carson vs. Central Cabarrus at 5 p.m.

Cox Mill vs. Carson and West Rowan vs. East Rowan at 7 p.m.

A home run derby will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday.

East Rowan plays Central Cabarrus on Friday at 3 p.m.

Salisbury will play in a fifth-place game at 5 p.m. on Friday. There also will be a third-place game at 5 p.m. prior to the 7 p.m. championship game.

UNCP awards

UNC Pembroke’s Avery Locklear was honored as defensive MVP for basketball, while Alexandria Bare was honored  as women’s golf MVP.

Both are former South Rowan standouts.

High school baseball

On Senior Night, South Rowan scored six runs in the second inning and rolled to a 10-3 win against Salisbury in Central Carolina Conference action on Wednesday.

South (14-8, 11-6) has won eight in a row and 12 of its last 13.

Luke Hiskey pitched five strong innings for the win and struck out six. Andrew Furr pitched the last two innings.

Eli Hiskey drove in two runs on South’s Senior Night. Jarrid Nelson had two hits.

Archie Dees had two hits for the Hornets. Bo Rusher took the loss.

The teams play again tonight at Salisbury at 7 p.m.

At Intimidators Stadium, Northwest Cabarrus knocked off Weddington 7-6 with a run in the seventh to take the fifth-place game.

Cole Pletcher had four hits for the Trojans, while Sam Walker had three. Andrew Raffaldt had two RBIs.

Greyson Barger knocked in four for Weddington.

In the third-place game at Intimidators Stadium, Robinson scored 13 runs in the second inning and pummeled Piedmont, 18-2.

Marshall Raper and Jake Dameron led the onslaught.

Rhett Lowder pitched a shutout with eight strikeouts and Hunter Sells had three hits as North Stanly beat North Moore in a Yadkin Valley Conference game on Tuesday.

Seth Pollen had a homer and two doubles and Tanner Tesh tripled and doubled in Oak Grove’s 8-3 CCC win against East Davidson on Wednesday.

Jake Stroud pitched Ledford to a 6-1 win against North Davidson to clinch the CCC championship.

High school softball

Ellen Yang had the only hit for Salisbury in a 15-0 loss to North Davidson on Wednesday in Central Carolina Conference play.

Abby Craver did the pitching for the Black Knights. Lexi Bryant drove in six runs.

East Forsyth edged Davie County in Wednesday’s Central Piedmont Conference game, 6-5.

Emma Patterson had three hits for the War Eagles. Karli Queen drove in two runs. Sydney Wyatt and Desiree Lewis had two hits each.

Ellie Goins homered in Mooresville 11-2 win against Lincoln Charter on Wednesday. Goins and Hailey Lane had three hits each.

Men’s lacrosse

  Catawba’s Peter Bourque earned his first South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honor for men’s lacrosse after being named Deep South Conference Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003.

Catawba finished second  in the SAC and returned to the USILA national rankings for the first time since 2012.

The team was ranked as high as No. 14 in Division II and was named in two top-20 polls for the past five weeks.

Catawba placed five players on the   South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse all-conference team.

Joe Barber and Kevin Geiger earned first team All-SAC honors, while Cole Fanzo and Payton Leonard were second team picks. Keenan D’Arcy was tabbed as honorable mention.

   Wingate’s Alex Llerandi was selected as the Player of the Year.

The conference tournament semifinals are set for Wingate on Friday. Catawba plays Queens at 7 p.m.

  

Women’s lacrosse

Catawba put four players on the South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse all-conference teams.

Senior Imani Grays was a second team selection, while senior Erin Green, junior Gianna Pezzulo and freshman Caroline Falcone were honorable mention picks.

Intimidators

CHARLESTON, S.C. —  Davis Martin struck out 11 hitters over six innings, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators over the Charleston RiverDogs in a 2-1 win on Wednesday. The Intimidators swept the three-game series with the win.

Charleston started the scoring in the second inning when Josh Breaux hit a solo home run.

The Intimidators took the lead for good with two runs in the seventh inning. Bryce Bush hit an RBI triple and then scored on a single by Michael Hickman.

SAC softball

  Due to a forecast of heavy rain on Friday, the SAC Softball Championship has been moved to Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28.

Games will begin at 9 a.m. at Catawba College’s Whitley Field.
