The Salisbury Elks
The Salisbury Elks recently provided 500 backpacks and more than 500 pounds of food to the Rowan County Food for Thought backpack program.
Run by Rowan Helping Ministries and Communities in Schools-Rowan, this assists at risk children by providing those students with enough food for the weekend while away from school.
Rich Penk, grant coordinator for Salisbury Lodge 699, saw a need so the Elks stepped in to help.

The next meeting of the Rowan Redbuds Garden Club will be Thursday, April 25 at 1 p.m. in the Stanback Room at Rowan Public Library headquarters, 201 W. Fisher St.
Carole Massey and Jean Lamb will present a program titled “Spring Seed Starting.” Visitors re welcome.

Our Song VI

On Sunday, April 28 at 4 p.m. in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on the campus of Catawba College, Our Song VI will be presented as the final choral concert of the 2018-2019 academic year.
In this concert, the music is chosen by the choir members themselves and many of the pieces have been arranged by the students themselves. Additionally, the concert will feature student directors.
Choirs featured in the hour-long program will be the Catawba Singers, the Catawba Chamber Choir, and the Catawba PopAC Choir.
Catawba Choirs are under the direction of Dr. Phillip E. Burgess, associate chair of music and director of choral/vocal studies. Jacob Hahn and Susan Trivette accompany.
The program is free and open to the public.

Largest Community Barn Quilt
MT. ULLA — The heart of The Biggest Community Barn Quilt Mural in North Carolina will be painted by people with special needs. This free workshop is May 5 at 3 p.m
Special needs participant of all ages and all abilities are invited to help create the butterfly centerpiece.
This is a free event for special needs individuals and their care team/family.
RSVP to 704-278-2800 if you would like to attend.
Our special painters will be given a scheduled Paint Time with volunteers assisting. A small section will be taped off for each participant. There is no right or wrong way to paint. Even if your loved one is only able to leave one small mark they can still be proud and say that they are a part of the Biggest Community Barn Quilt in North Carolina.

Bennett Place examines Civil War surrenders at 154th anniversary event
DURHAM — Two old enemies met in the humble parlor at the farm house of James and Nancy Bennett.
The result of that meeting was the largest surrender of troops during the Civil War on April 26, 1865. This was not the only surrender during the Civil War, and Bennett Place will examine it and other surrenders in the program, ‘Terms of Surrender,” Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
