Area Sports Briefs: West softball rolls

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s softball team stayed in first place in the North Piedmont Conference race by pounding South Iredell on Tuesday, 11-3.
Whitley Arnott pitched a complete game for the Falcons (11-2, 6-0) and struck out 10. Taylor Walton homered, doubled and drove in two runs. Arnott had a triple and knocked in two. Reagan Haggas had three RBIs. Kenadi Sproul doubled and knocked in two.
Taylor Poole, KK Dowling and Cheyenne Barber scored two runs each.
Kelly Goodrum had a double and a triple for the Vikings.
West is scheduled to play at East Rowan today.

Davie County lost to West Forsyth in Central Piedmont Conference softball on Tuesday, 4-1.
Karli Queen had the RBI for the War Eagles. Rachel Bostic pitched a complete game and struck out four.

Mooresville pounded Lake Norman on Tuesday, 13-4. Hailey Lane had four hits, three for extra bases, for the Blue Devils. Olivia Marshall and Ellie Goins homered. Kali Morton struck out 14.

Regan Spencer pitched a one-hitter as North Davidson beat West Davidson in Central Carolina Conference action on Tuesday, 11-0.
HS basketball
North Stanly’s Bryson Childress has accepted an invitation to play in this summer’s East-West All-Star Basketball Game in Greensboro.
Mount Airy’s Tom Childress, Bryson’s grandfather, played in the 1960 All-Star Game.
Albemarle’s Paul Childress, Bryson’s father, played in the 1989 All-Star Game. Albemarle’s Brad Childress, Bryson’s uncle, played in the 1986 All-Star Game.
HS baseball
Davie County won again on Tuesday, beating East Forsyth in a Central Piedmont Conference game, 7-2.
Aaron Williams had two hits and drove in four runs for the War Eagles (16-1, 7-0), who are having one of the best seasons in school history.
Garrett Chandler had two hits and scored twice.
Carson Whisenhunt was strong on the mound, pitching into the sixth inning and striking out nine.
HS tennis
Salisbury’s boys tennis team stayed unbeaten with a 9-0 Central Carolina Conference win against North Davidson on Tuesday.
Roarke Burton, Ethan McGee, Sean Archer, Leo Schiavinato, Jander Rodas-Palacios and Juan Salazar won singles matches for the Hornets (17-0).
Burton/Archer, Schiavinato/McGee and Salazar/Rodas-Palacios won doubles matches.
Salisbury is scheduled to host South Rowan today to finish the CCC season and will honor seniors.
Salisbury will take on North Rowan on Thursday.
Legion baseball
Rowan County Americn Legion baseball sign-ups are scheduled for Sunday, April 14 , at 3 p.m. at Harold B. Jarrett Post 342 in Salisbury.
Players will need to bring a copy of their driver’s license or a birth certificate.
Insurance forms will be filled out, so a parent needs to be present to sign. A notary will be on hand.

Local golf
Bill Woods made a double eagle 2 on the par-5 No. 18 hole at McCanless on Tuesday.
Woods was playing in the “Tuesday Scramble.”
The group used his drive and his perfect second shot from 114 yards out. He used his “115 club.”
Woods hasn’t had a hole-in-one in 40 years of golf, but now he has a much rarer “albatross” to his credit.
Woods was playing with John Mark Trexler, Eddy Laton and David Huneycutt.

GARS members played an ABCD tournament at Lexington Golf Club.
‘A’ Flight winner was Franklin Ford with a net of 60.87. ‘A’ Flight low gross winner was Bernard King.
‘B’ Flight winner was Nelson Earnhardt with a net of 67.96. ‘B’ Flight low gross winner was Ken Miller.
‘C’ Flight winner was Tommy Ellis with a net of 59.52. ‘C’ Flight low gross winner was John Goodman.
‘D’ Flight winner was Ralph Luther with a net of 72.71. ‘D’ Flight low gross winner was Larry Luther.
King and Franklin Ford tied for low gross with 71s, while Ellis had low net score.
Bernard Caldwell 71, shot a 71. Miller, 83, shot an 83.

On a delightful Sunday afternoon, Debbie & Dan Ingelston and Mary & Gene Seaford excelled on the course and took first place in McCanless Couples play.
Susan Houston, Calvin Smith and Susan Wydner took second.
Smith had closest to the pin. David Huneycutt had longest putt.
College track
ROCK HILL, S.C. — Catawba’s MeKayla White is the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for April 1-7.
A freshman jumper, White won the long jump at the Phoenix Invitational with a leap of 5.88 meters, breaking her own school record.
She also bettered her school record in the triple jump with a fifth-place finish of 11.23 meters.
College men’s golf
PETERSBURG, Va. — Alex Stewart led Livingstone College to a third-place finish in the CIAA Northern Division Championship at Dogwood Trace Golf Course in Petersburg, Va., on Tuesday.
The LC team broke the single-day school record with a score of 295.
Stewart was the medalist, shooting 70-72 — 142.
Virginia Union was the winner (601) and Chowan claimed second (607).
Livingstone placed third at 618.
The Blue Bears travel to New Kent, Va., for the CIAA Championship Tournament, set for April 18-19 at The Club at Viniterra.
College women’s golf
The South Atlantic Conference wrapped up its women’s golf championship at the Lake Hickory Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Anderson took the team title, shooting 10-over par in the final two rounds to overcome a first-round defict.
Carson-Newman freshman Maeve Cummins won the medal at 3-over.
Catawba finished ninth.
College baseball
Catawba right-hander Greg Brown was South Atlantic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Brown, a sophomore, won twice and struck out 16 batters.

Surry Community College sophomore Jacob Tuttle (A.L. Brown) pitched a complete game and won at No. 7 Rockingham CC.
Tuttle allowed three hits and struck out nine batters. He threw 104 pitches, striking out nine and walking one.

Senior Matt Honeycutt (South Rowan) has hit six home runs for Mars Hill.
College football
Livingstone College will conclude spring practice with its annual Spring Game this Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Alumni Memorial Stadium.
The Blue Bears will wrap up their 15-practice spring schedule with a scrimmage inside the stadium.
The game is part of a fun-filled weekend for the Blue Bears with an Easter egg hunt inside the stadium at 11 a.m.
Racing
Deven Youker, who was playing football and wrestling for Carson not long ago, is a 19-year-old rear tire changer for the No. 95 Toyota driven by Matt DiBenedetto.
DiBenedetto finished 12th at Bristol.
Pro baseball
Jerry Sands (Catawba) is playing in the Korea Baseball League and hit his first homer of the season, a grand slam, on Tuesday.
