SALISBURY — A registered sex offender has been charged with kidnapping and drug-related offenses, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

Kenneth Durant Jones, 54, of the 5000 block of U.S. 601 in Salisbury, was arrested Monday and held on a $25,000 bond. Sheriff’s deputies got a call about 6:20 p.m. Monday to report an attempted abduction.

The woman caller said she was running from a man who was trying to abduct her. She said he drove her around secluded back roads for at least 10 minutes against her will and become irate when she asked to be released.

A deputy met the 28-year-old woman, who told him she had a job for the day with a local temporary service. She had been paired with Jones as a carpool. She said the two had worked together all day and he seemed to be fine.

At the end of the day, Jones offered to take the woman to a local Food Lion so she could get money.

The woman said that instead of going to a store, Jones took her to a residence. She waited in the car while Jones went inside. She said when Jones returned, he appeared to be acting erratic and she suspected he had taken a drug.

The woman said Jones drove to the local store but did not stop, instead making a lap around the parking lot before returning to the road. He then drove around back roads as the woman repeatedly asked him to let her out of the car, she said.

She said she tried to get out of the vehicle when Jones would slow down, but every time she tried to get out, he would speed up. Jones then started asking sex-related questions, and the woman said she felt panicked. She told the deputy she called 911 as Jones drove onto Heiligtown Road, a dead-end road.

During the 911 call, dispatchers heard the woman ask Jones to let her go a number of times, a report said. She maintained contact with 911 dispatchers and told them Jones was chasing her on foot.

An East Spencer Police Department officer arrived and held Jones and his vehicle, a 2016 black Kia Optima, in the 800 block of Heiligtown Road.

The victim hid until more law enforcement officers arrived.

Deputies learned Jones was a registered sex offender after a conviction in the 1990s for forcible rape. Deputies searched Jones and found a bag containing small white rocks in his’ underwear. The rocks appeared to be crack cocaine.

Jones was charged with second-degree kidnapping, felony possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond.
