HICKORY — Henderson Lentz hit a three-run, inside-the-park homer on Saturday to highlight Catawba’s 13-2 South Atlantic Conference baseball win at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Jeremy Simpson and Jackson Raper also   smacked home runs for the Indians to back strong pitching by Sawyer Strickland (5-1).

Simpson had three hits. Hunter Shepherd and Jacob Nester had two each.

Saturday’s second game was scheduled for seven innings, but Catawba needed nine to beat the Bears, 10-6.

Cameron Morrison had the tiebreaking hit in the ninth and Catawba tacked on three more runs.

Simpson hit another homer. DJ Laxton had three hits and drove in four runs. Nester, Lee Poteat and Bryce Butler had two hits each.

Shepherd pitched seven innings, but got no decision. Peyton Williams (2-1) won in relief. Riley Myers got the Bears out in the bottom of the ninth.

Catawba (30-8, 15-3) plays Barton at Newman Park on Tuesday.

HS tennis

North Rowan  senior Hans Roemer won the Yadkin Valley Conference tennis tournament held at West Stanly on Saturday and qualified for regional play on May 3-4.

Roemer defeated Kong Maua (North Stanly) 8-0 in the quarterfinals, Rohan Sharma (Gray Stone), 8-1 in the semifinals, and Kevin Agner (Gray Stone) 8-3 in the championship match.

Roemer improved to an overall singles record of 13-0.

HS baseball

SPENCER — Parker Lippard and Nick Peltz combined on a strong pitching effort on Saturday as the Salisbury Hornets won at North Rowan, 9-1.

Lippard (3-1) pitched four innings for the win, while Peltz worked three for his second save.

The Hornets (9-5) scored six runs in the third inning to take charge of the non-conference game. Bo Rusher walloped his third homer of the season.

Vance Honeycutt doubled and singled. Lippard scored two runs. Blake Clark drove in a run.

Logan Stoner and Caelan Stinson had two hits each for the Cavaliers (0-12).

Travis Berry took the loss.

North Rowan lost a tight Yadkin Valley Conference game against North Moore on Friday.

In a 2-1 setback, Jordan Goodine homered for the North Rowan run.

Stoner had two hits, while Charlie Durham had a double.

Bryan Lawson pitched a complete game and struck out nine but took the loss.

HS softball

SPENCER — Salisbury scored 12 runs in the second inning and rolled to a 17-0 win at North Rowan on Saturday.

Ellen Yang pitched a one-hitter in the three-inning contest.

At the plate, Yang homered, doubled twice, scored four times and drove in six runs.

Journie Dawson and Alli Tuck had two hits each.

Jaliyah Oats had two RBIs. Patty Garcia scored three runs. Toni Koehler scored two.

Taven Sherrill had the hit for North.

College lacrosse

Cole Fanzo scored seven goals as Catawba rolled to a 16-4 win over host Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

afternoon at Meares Stadium. The 19th-ranked Catawba Indians ran its record win streak to eight games and improved to 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 3-7 and 0-5.

Fanzo tallied four times in the opening half as the Indians built a 9-2 edge. When the senior scored back-to-back in the first minute and a half of the fourth quarter, Catawba led 16-2.

Freshman Christian Norrie picked up three goals, while Tony Bellotte scored twice. Trevor Bellotte had a goal and four assists with Joe Barber added a goal and three assists. Robert Morrison delivered three assists.

Shawn Casebolt won 16-of-24 face-offs and grabbed nine ground balls. Kevin Geiger played the majority of the game in goal and posted eight saves. Hunter Cheuvront played the final 11 minutes and stopped a pair of shots.

Zac Carrigan had two goals for the Lions. Joel Borman made eight saves with Ryan Prylinski adding five.

Catawba travels to Limestone on Friday for a 7 p.m. match up with the second-ranked Saints.
