TYRO — Most of South Rowan senior Jarrid Nelson’s 99 pitches were good ones, and Kory Moss threw the last one.

South held on for a 3-2 Central Carolina Conference road win at West Davidson on Friday. South (6-7, 4-6) managed to split the season series with the Green Dragons (5-6, 4-6) and beat a pitcher (Drew Wright) who has been tough against everyone.

The Raiders played from in front. They got a run in the top of the first when Nolan Eudy’s bunt scored Nathan Chrismon.

No. 9 hitter Ty Hubbard delivered a run-scoring single in the second inning.

After Hubbard and Chrismon had bunt singles to start the fifth, Jack Weaver’s RBI single made it 3-0.  South had a chance to break it open in the fifth but left the bases loaded.

Nelson (3-1) kept the door shut on West Davidson through six innings, with South’s infield turning a double play to help him finish the sixth.

Things got dicey in the bottom of the seventh. Nelson got the first out, but then the Green Dragons had three straight singles to fill the bases.

Nelson notched his ninth strikeout for the second out.

A hit batsman made it 3-1. A base hit by Zac Story made it 3-2, and the bases were loaded for No. 3 hitter Ben Purvis.

Moss relieved Nelson at that point and earned his second save of the week. He got ahead of Purvis, and on a 1-and-2 pitch, Purvis grounded to Hubbard, the freshman second baseman. Hubbard flipped to first, and the Raiders owned the win.

Weaver had three hits for the Raiders, while Hubbard and Chrismon had two each.

South plays at Thomasville on Monday and is scheduled to play at West Rowan on Thursday before hosting Thomasville on Friday.
