Area Sports Briefs: West baseball wins in extra innings

TROUTMAN — West Rowan’s baseball team pulled out a 7-6 North Piedmont Conference victory at South Iredell on Tuesday.

Steven Smith singled home Mike Molenda with the deciding run in the eighth inning.

Down 6-3 in the sixth, West (6-3, 2-1) scratched out three runs to tie. Neither team could score in the seventh.

Payne Stolsworth homered and  had three of West’s eight hits. Smith drove in two runs.

Stolsworth  (1-0) got the win in relief, throwing two scoreless innings. Cullen Davis pitched into the fifth  inning and struck out seven.

• West romped 16-0 in the jayvee contest.

SALISBURY — Oak Grove beat Salisbury in Central Carolina Conference action on Tuesday, 9-3.

Jack Fisher went 3-for-3 for the Hornets, while Bo Rusher had two hits and two RBIs. Max Crawford (0-3) took the loss for the Hornets (7-5, 6-3).

Griffyn Shelton had four RBIs for the Grizzlies. Seth Polen homered and drove in three to back  the pitching of Tanner Tesh.

LANDIS — Hunter Hopkins pitched West Davidson to a 5-1 Central Carolina Conference win over South Rowan (4-7, 3-6) on Tuesday. Matt Fowler drove in two runs for the Green Dragons.

Nolan Eudy had two hits for the Raiders. Luke Hiskey (0-4) pitched well for four innings but took the loss.

CLEMMONS —  Davie County overcame a 4-0 deficit in the last two innings and beat Central Piedmont  rival West Forsyth on Tuesday, 5-4.

Garrett Chandler homered.

John Davenport won it in relief, and Anthony Azar saved it.

KANNAPOLIS — Cox Mill outscored A.L. Brown on Tuesday, 12-9, in South Piedmont Conference action.

Nick Alderfer had three hits and three RBIs for the Chargers.

Matt Shubert and Aiden Schenck had two hits each for the Wonders.

KANNAPOLIS — Evan McGee homered and was the winning pitcher in Central Cabarrus’ 8-2 South Piedmont Conference win against Central Cabarrus on Tuesday.

Sam Yelton doubled, tripled and drove in two runs for the Vikings.

WALLBURG — Potential draft pick Chris Villaman struck out 12 in six innings to lead Ledford to a 9-1 Central Carolina Conference win over Central Davidson on Tuesday.

HS girls soccer

Gracie Thomason scored both goals as Carson opened North Piedmont Conference play on Tuesday with a 2-0 win against North Iredell.

Thomason, a junior, announced a commitment to Catawba on Tuesday.

West Rowan won against East Rowan, 6-0, to start North Piedmont Conference play on Tuesday.

Mackenna Clifton scored three goals.   Lejla Mehmedovic had two goals, and Selma Mehmedovic had one goal.

Both Mehmedovics had two assists, and Lauren Corriher had one.  Ryley Corriher made eight saves.

HS boys tennis

West Rowan won against Statesville on Tuesday, 8-1.

  Winners for the Falcons in singles were Kevin Sullivan, Layton Butler, T.J. Smith, Trevor Mervine, Alex Keadle and Steve Wilmot.

Butler/Keadle and Mervine/Wilmot won doubles matches.

East Rowan tennis won against North Iredell, 8-1.

Sweeping singles were Nick Shoemaker, Landon Shuping, Billy McGee, Jaden Collins, Garren Hudson and Gavin McDaniel.

Doubles winners were Shoemaker/Shuping and Hudson/Drew Roane.

Shuping is undefeated in singles this year.

North Rowan lost 7-2 to South Stanly in a Yadkin Valley Conference match on Tuesday.

Hans Roemer rolled at  No. 1 singles, while J.D. Hager won at No. 2 singles on a tiebreaker.

HS softball

Taylor Walton and Mary Sobataka homered as West Rowan pounded North Iredell in North Piedmont Conference softball on Tuesday, 11-0.

Walton and Sobataka drove in three runs each, and Hannah Pratt had two hits.

Whitley Arnott shined in  the circle with a five-inning one-hitter and 12 strikeouts.

Carson crushed Statesville 20-0 on Tuesday in North Piedmont Conference action.

Kaitlyn Honeycutt pitched a three-inning no-hitter.

Honeycutt went 3-for-4  and drove in four runs. Liza Simmerson and Maci Cooper had three hits each.

Getting two hits each were Ellie Wilhelm, Ashlyn Ellenburg, Tate Bargerm Skyler Smith and Sierra Ratliff.

Carson had 21 hits.

Mariah Pearson had a perfect day at the plate and drove in four runs as Mooresville smashed Mallard Creek on Tuesday, 17-2.

Madison McGuire had two hits and Ashlyn Plott had the RBI in South Rowan’s 17-1 loss to Central Davidson on Tuesday in Central Carolina Conference play.

College baseball

Catawba lost at Mount Olive, 11-3, in Tuesday’s non-conference game.

Jackson Raper, Hunter Shepherd and DJ Laxton drove in runs for the Indians. Greg Brown (3-1) took the loss.

College softball

Catawba lost two games at Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday in South Atlantic Conference play.

Catawba lost the first game 1-0 despite some strong pitching by Preston Ellenberg and Madison Hunter (7-4).

• Catawba was pounded in the second game, 14-5, despite a homer, a double and five RBIs by Jordan Dean.

Taylor Martin had two hit for the Indians. Brooke Walser (4-5) took the loss.

  

College tennis

For the second time this season, N.C. State men’s tennis captains Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden (Salisbury) were tabbed as the ACC Doubles Team of the Week.

Catawba’s men (10-6, 3-2) lost 6-1  to  fifth-ranked Wingate in South Atlantic Conference ction on Tuesday afternoon at Wingate.

Catawba’s women (11-5, 2-3)  fell to 19th-ranked Wingate 5-2 in South Atlantic Conference women’s tennis action at Wingate.

College women’s golf

Catawba placed seventh at the Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic, which wrapped up on Tuesday.

UNC Pembroke hosted the event at the 5,812-yard, Par 72 River Landing Golf Club and won the event.

Catawba’s Kaley Barts shot a 78 on Tuesday and finished fourth in the tournament at 221.

UNC Pembroke’s Katy Flax shot a 5-over 77 on Tuesday, but held on to the lead for medalist honors at 218. She was two shots ahead of teammate Alexandria Bare (South Rowan) and Merrimack’s Krystal Knight, who finished on 220.

Catawba will play next week at Tusculum’s Agnes McAmis Memorial at the Link Hills Country Club.

College men’s golf

Livingstone College golf team placed third in the CIAA Southern Division Golf Tournament at Charles T. Myers Golf Club in Charlotte on Tuesday.

The Blue Bears’ two-day score was 620 behind tournament winner Virginia Union University (596) and Saint Augustine’s University. Fayetteville State University (647), Chowan University (655), Johnson C. Smith University (676), Virginia State University (686) and Elizabeth City State University (804) rounded out the field.

The Blue Bears had two competitors finish in the top 10. Alex Stewart shot a 151 for seventh and DeAngelo Stowe shot 154 to tie for 8th. Michael Sutton scored 156 to place 12th.

  GREENWOOD, S.C. — Catawba moved up a spot and finished 20th at the Bearcat Golf Classic, which concluded on Tuesday. The three-round tournament was hosted by Lander at the 6,800-yard, par-72 Greenwood Country Club.

Tanner Bibey led Catawba and finished 16th. He carded a final round,  4-under 68 to post a 216 total. Tyler Mulkey  (North Rowan) finished at 222 and placed 41st.

Catawba is in action next week in the Tennessee River Rumble at the WindRiver Golf Course in Lenoir City, Tenn.

College hoops

  Roger Ray, a junior guard from Livingstone College, was named to the second team of the NABC Coaches Division II All-District team.

  Ray ranked second in the CIAA in scoring, averaging 21.2 points per game.

  

Mid. school soccer

West Rowan’s boys tied Corriher Lipe 1-1 with a  second-half comeback.

Franco Reyes scored on a cross from David Camacho. West’s defense, led by captain Mason Quarles, played a strong game.

West’s girls beat Corriher Lipe 5-2 in the rain.

Emily Kelly had seven saves in goal. Brittany Vanhoose had two goals and an assist. Anna Mead had two goals, while Evelyn Kwitowski scored on a PK.

Lesli Guerrero  had three assists.

Local golf

Fifty-four GARS members played at the Revival at the Crescent.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Larry Petrea with a net of 64.37.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Allen Hammill with a net of 66.13.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Mike Sides with a net of 61.40. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Larry Luther with a net of 59.45.

Petrea had low gross with a 71 and Luther won low net. Clive Mahaffey, 83,shot  83. Bobby  Bryant made an eagle 3 on the No. 17 hole.
