Area Sports Briefs: Catawba softball splits

AIKEN, S.C. — Catawba’s softball team split Sunday’s doubleheader at USC Aiken.
Both games went into extra innings. Catawba lost in nine innings, 4-3, before coming back to win a wild affair, 13-7, also in nine innings.
Allie Baker and Grace Holland had RBIs in the opener, and Catawba scored on a double steal.
• In the second game, Jordan Dean’s homer tied the game in the seventh. Then Dean had the go-ahead RBI in the ninth.
Baker and Sierrah McCarthy had two RBIs each for the Indians.
Catawba baseball
Catawba hasn’t been able to play a baseball game yet this weekend, but hopes to play a single game at Newman Park against Wingate today at 5 p.m. and a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Monday.
HS tennis
West Rowan tennis standout Payton Holt, a three-time county player of the year in Rowan, has committed to Emory & Henry.

West Rowan quarterback Payne Stolsworth signed with N.C. Wesleyan on Friday.

UNC Pembroke’s Brandon Sloop (Carson) finished as regional runner-up at 184 pounds and qualified for the national tournament in Cleveland, Ohio, in March.

Mid. school hoops
Erwin’s girls defeated China Grove, 37-22.
Allie Martin scored 12 points for the Eagles. Daisy Berry and Kori Miller had seven each, and Morgan Tomlinson had six.
Avery Crowell scored nine for the Red Devils.
Women’s basketball
UNC Pembroke senior Avery Locklear (South Rowan) added another impressive notch to her collegiate resume on Friday morning when she was one of five student-athletes in the NCAA Southeast Region, as well as the only Peach Belt Conference player, to be named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District women’s basketball team.
A 22-game starter for the Black & Gold, Locklear is averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists this season. She also maintains a 3.99 cumulative grade point average in the classroom as a history major. Friday’s announcement is the latest in a long line of academic awards that includes a pair of Peach Belt Conference Elite 15 honors.

College lacrosse
MELBOURNE, Fla. — Catawba men’s lacrosse notched its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 12-8 victory over host Florida Tech at Panther Field. Cole Fanzo tallied four goals to help Catawba improve to 1-2 on the season.
Defense was the story in the opening half. The teams were tied 1-1 after a quarter. Colin Gesswein and Tony Bellotte posted goals in the second quarter as Catawba went to the break up 3-1.
